Welcome to FanFiction Fridays – “A Whole in One”! Today Cared, AllyVera, and I, MC, are going to share with you some first-rate one shots. Ones we found memorable and that demonstrate to us it’s not always size that matters…it’s what you do with it! 😉

Bella, a fledgling lawyer, has better luck in a courtroom than with men. Enter the hottie in the pricey suit who offers to pay double her going rate, and he’s not talking legal fees. The pair find themselves deep in a compensation-based misunderstanding until a few months later when she realizes she may be in love with her one and only regular.

This one shot is a win win all around! Not only is it a complete story to read in one, it was the 1st place winner Judges Vote and 2nd place winner Public Vote in the Taste of the Forbidden Contest. Bella is a brilliant lawyer, successful in her career, but she struggles to find the right “working relationship” in her personal life. She just can’t seem to find the right balance between the two…even when she meets Edward Cullen, where their relationship takes on a whole new meaning of “working” for Bella.
I really thought this story was very well-done. It’s a long one shot told in third person narrative, which clearly portrays a unique and very hot Edward and Bella bedroom relationship giving us plenty of detail to *cough* enjoy all that they experience! *fans self just from reminiscing*
Bella is a blockbuster actress who’s out to make a joke of Hollywood. A night of mishaps places her in the bed of the most egotistical actor in tinsel town; a man she loves to hate. Trouble doesn’t end with just a litter of kittens.

Of course, many of you already know that I am a sucker for a good Actorward, and when I came across this little gem after it was added to The Best of Actorward Community, run by our very own AllyVera and Cared, I had to read it straight away! It’s actually a bit more than a one shot, it’s three entertaining and amusing chapters, making for a short but sweet, romantic Edward and Bella love story. Both characters are actors and attend the Oscars as separate guests, but as the evening progresses and sparks fly…they might just win more than an Academy Award!
I thoroughly enjoyed this short story…but then like I said, I LOVE me a sweet Actorward! Bella’s snark and Edward’s obvious adoration for her in the story were perfect! They made me smile and literally LOL! Enjoy!
Bella Swan is single, in her late 30’s and wishes she could turn back the hands of time to win over her much younger boss, big shot movie star, Edward Cullen. One night out leads Bella’s inner cougar to surface.

This sexy one shot with the interesting title and good story progression, was written for The Cougar Revolution Anonymous One-Shot Contest. Bella is a 36 year old personal assistant/publicist who lusts after her much, much, younger boss – 23 year old – Edward Cullen, but as Bella says, they have a lovely relationship, “…we shared a friendship like no other. We usually shared a hotel suite because one of us always ended up in the other’s bed anyway. Although platonic, we shared cuddles, and spent immense amounts time talking or curled up watching movies, or reading scripts or itineraries for the following day, so falling asleep with him was nothing new. We knew each other inside out.” And by the end of the story…yes, they certainly do, and we also learn from Cougarella that… “Age is just a number, baby!” 😉
I’d like to mention TheFicChick, who has written some of the most lovely one shots I’ve read in a long time. She wrote the hilarious Swimmerward The Purple Banana Hammock, which I rec’d on FanFiction Fridays – Aug 24/12, and has recently posted three more beautifully written one shots for your reading pleasure. I am really enjoying her writing and hoping for a continuation of Departures!

2. Through the Kitchen Window – “From very early on, I worried that the biggest thing in my youngest son’s life would be the girl he could never escape. I thought it would be horrible for his story to be so ensnared with someone else’s, such a tangled ball of yarn that it couldn’t be unknotted. Bright, colorful, beautiful to be sure, but so hopelessly snarled in and around itself that it would never be freed.”

Unplanned is without a doubt one of the best stories I have read in fan fiction, hands down (and I don’t just mean best one shot either). It was originally an entry in the D.I.L.F Contest, but it is so much more than that, this story has the love that I look for in an ExB story (but sadly don’t often see) – irrevocable, deep and eternal. *Serious tissue warning for this one*
One-shot. What happens when you meet someone who challenges everything you thought you knew? Edward Cullen, partner in the Volturi firm finds out when he meets his new assistant. Slightly OOC, E/B. Rated M just in case, for language. No lemons.

IsaKasses is the author of one of the most popular stories in the fandom, “This is Not My Life” – but my favorite story of hers is definitely Monday Morning. It is told from Edward’s point of view where he gains a new assistant, Bella. Edward is not impressed with Bella, thinking she is lazy and lacks focus. I particularly loved Edward’s journey of discovery, not just his discovery of Bella, but also of himself.
Every day he passes and I let him, knowing that everything’s wrong; wanting so much to fix it but scared to try. Sometimes doing nothing is the worst form of cowardice, and right now, he needs me to be brave. Winner – Anonymous Angst Contest – the Popular Vote and Most Deserved HEA.

There is no getting around it, this story broke my heart and mended it again in one chapter. It is a beautiful, sad story that blossoms with hope and deep love.
I hear him before I see him, the quiet squeak of the wheels on the stroller reaching me as I bend over my garden bed, trying to rid it of a sudden burst of spring weeds. The sound makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end, partly in shock, partly in disbelief, and when his familiar frame comes into view around the hedge from next door, I stand and take a deep breath.
I haven’t seen him for a week. A week in which I’ve wondered, probably too many times, how he is. What he was doing. If I should try to see him.
But now here he is, as if nothing has happened…
Awkward, self-conscious Bella distracts herself from the torments of high school gym class by watching the adorable if painfully shy new kid, Edward. A cruel prank finally gives them a chance to get to know one other. For the TwiFans for Haiti compilation.

This story holds two of my greatest weaknesses in fanfiction, Geekward and High School. Edward is just adorable, you want to gather him up and protect him, but Bella beats us to it! Bella is a bit of a geek herself, but she is smart enough to see the catch that Edward is…clever girl! Enjoy!

Many, many moon ago when I was a student, somehow despite the lure of the novels, plays, and poetry on my English course, the short story segment was always my favourite. It amazed me that an author could take me away into another world and make me feel some strong emotions; how they could make characters memorable and leave me satisfied using so few words. I adore good one shots for the same reasons and I have great admiration for the authors who write these so successfully. Naturally, I have a long list of great one shots saved on my laptop that I could have chosen from, but I decided to bring you some of those I could name off the top of my head. These are all fics that I read some time ago and yet they have stayed in my mind.
AH/AU: The traveling Edward Cullen finds himself in the backwoods of a small Washington town. Stuck for the night, he takes up the offer of the local Sheriff for shelter, only to find his lovely daughter, Bella, the milkmaid, the real accommodation.

I was an admirer of the author from her unique fic, Elemental, but it was the clever title of this fic that caught my eye back in 2010. It’s set in Washington in 1900, with a dashing irresistible Edward and a very sweet and innocent Bella who thinks a Greek God has come to earth. The visual of Billy Burke as Sheriff Swan made me giggle but I don’t fancy being on the wrong end of his shotgun. Snicker!
Have a look at Edward and Bella’s first meeting and their obvious instant attraction.
Edward went to go stand next to the Sheriff to get a look at this Bella and froze in his steps. There before him was the most beautiful creature he had ever seen. A young woman with long, dark brunette hair, tied with a blue ribbon at her nape, was sitting on a stool, milking a cow.
The girl, Bella, looked at him with wide eyes and blushed, tucking her head against the beast that she was so lovingly milking.
“Bella, this is Mr. Cullen. He is staying in the hay-loft tonight to wait for the Doc. He’ll be eating breakfast with us in the morning,” The Sheriff stated, looking between the two young people, as his daughter’s reaction to the man at his side did not go unnoticed by him.
“Mr. Cullen, I can bring you a pillow and a blanket for tonight,” Bella offered Edward, looking back up at him shyly.
“Uh…thank you, Miss Swan,” Edward responded, maneuvering his bag in front of him as he felt little Edward awaken and demand to be milked by the pretty girl, too.
The Sheriff cleared his throat to get Edward’s attention away from his daughter. Edward turned to look at the Sheriff and swallowed hard, seeing his face filled with disapproval.
“Let me show you to the ladder,” Sheriff Swan said, motioning further down the walkway.
Edward followed him and almost ran into the man as the Sheriff stopped abruptly and pivoted back to look at the younger man.
“Listen here, Cullen. We may be small-town folks, but my daughter is a lady and is to be treated as such. So no funny business, you hear?” The Sheriff gave Edward the evil eye.
“So no funny business” – luckily for us and for Bella, Edward soon forgets those words. *wink*
The Guitar by Gemgirl65 won Best Romance in the Truly Anonymous Twilight One-Shot Picture and Prompt Contest.
Bella Swan doesn’t do one-night stands. But the way Edward Cullen makes love to that guitar onstage has her wishing she could trade places with it, if only for one night… Winner “Best Romance” in the Truly Anonymous Twilight OS Picture Prompt Contest

It’s no secret that I’m a fan of the gorgeous Gemgirl65 and her stories, The Agreement, Massage Therapy, and Amnesia. With The Guitar, she shows she has also mastered the art of the one shot. It’s the morning after the night before and Bella recalls how she, like the guitar, was played to perfection. Bella is a sweetheart and emboldened by this magic-fingered, silver-tongued Edward, she takes a chance and lives out her fantasy.
It’s obvious that Gemgirl65, like Bella, is a fan of guitar players, as she describes Edward’s guitar playing so beautifully and somehow makes it very sensual and sexy. Actually it’s not just Edward’s guitar playing, the story itself is sensual, sexy and above all romantic.
“Heineken,” she shouted to the bartender over the noisy crowd.
“Make it two.”
She turned to see the owner of the smooth-as-silk baritone behind her, then nearly jumped out of her own skin. There he was, her guitar demigod, in all his sweaty post-gig splendor. A sheen of moisture bathed his face and dewed the bramble of stubble covering his jaw and neck. The patrons swarming the bar jostled him into her and the dampness of his t-shirt pressed against her bare arm.
She should have been grossed out by his sweat. The unwelcome sensation of being coated in second-hand perspiration normally would have sent her shuddering. But as he smiled apologetically down at her, his lips curling into a disarmingly crooked grin, he was instantly absolved. Moreover, he, and his sweat, were welcomed.
He stood a head taller than she did, and when the bartender held their beers aloft, the guitarist easily reached over the packed crowd to retrieve them. He handed her one bottle, then clinked his own briefly against hers.
“Cheers,” he said.
“What are we toasting to?” she asked.
“Anything, “he said with that bewitching half-grin. “Everything.”
One Cup of Chunky Peanut Butter by jennlynnfs won First Place People’s Choice Award in the Awkward Contest and was also a Judge’s Pick for favorite story.
WINNER for the AwkWard Contest. With best friend Angela moving forward in her relationship with Ben, Bella feels she’s being left behind. She tries to remedy the situation by going for Edward Cullen, but being inexperienced makes for awkward situations.

No matter how many times I read this cute story, I still makes me smile. It is set in high school and seniors Angela and Bella learn a lot more biology than Mr. Banner is teaching them. Oh, now I have you thinking this is femme slash LOL. It’s not, Angela’s lab partner for her extracurricular activity is Ben. It seems Angela needed a little tutoring in this subject and had turned to Edward for help. Again, it’s not what you are thinking. His help was in the form of theory not demonstration. It does however, give sweet, never been kissed Bella, quite the crazy idea. Following advice from Alice about how to focus elsewhere so as not to panic under pressure, she puts her plan into action and the hilarity ensues.
Edward is a perfect an Edward as you will ever find. He is very adorable and a little adorkable, a perfect combination. Oh, did I mention gorgeous and a really nice guy. Jealousward makes an appearance and that ups his level of hotness. This is a sweet, fluffy, fun read. Excerpt:
After a moment, she asked, “What are your plans for Friday night?”
He leaned forward with his elbows on the table. “I don’t have any.”
She arched an eyebrow at him. “Not even a date?”
He shook his head and returned her expression. “Why? Are you offering?”
Her cheeks heated up. “I-” Two and a half cups of flour. One teaspoon of baking powder. Half a teaspoon of salt. “Well, maybe you could…watch a movie with us. If you don’t have any other plans.” One and a half teaspoons of baking soda. One cup of brown sugar. One cup of white sugar. One cup of unsalted butter. “I’d like it if you could.” One cup of chunky peanut butter.
Edward stared at her. His mouth was partly open.
She was quick to backtrack. “You don’t have to though.” One cup of chunky peanut butter. “I totally understand if you’re keeping your plans open for something else.” One cup of chunky peanut butter. One cup of chunky peanut butter. One cup of chunky peanut butter.
ONE CUP OF CHUNKY PEANUT BUTTER.
Edward shook his head. “Oh, no. I’m not-Nothing else will come up.” He gave her a small smile. “I’d like to watch a movie with you.” He rubbed the back of his neck. “And Alice and Angela.
“Bake at 375 for about ten minutes. “Okay.” She smiled.
“Okay.” He returned her smile.

americnxidiot is one of the first authors that I read when I entered this crazy fanfic world and still remains a favourite. Ourselves We Find In The Sea has an ethereal quality to the writing; it is beautiful but simple.
I could tell you this story is about a girl finding a boy on an otherwise deserted cove. That is true, but it’s so much more than that. It’s about taking a chance, seizing the day, and finding your true love.
Most of the shoreline I’ve explored has been completely natural. Maybe there was some trash littering the sand or a few logs arranged in a circle around an impromptu bonfire, but none of that could prepare me for what I see here. Human hands shaped this beach. Twenty feet ahead of me, a pier is half buried in the sand, utterly ravaged by its environment. The only intact part exists a few yards behind the line of seaweed that marks high tide. But the pier is not what stuns me. Just inside the surf, obscured from the previous beach by the jetty but clearly visible from here, rests a carousel—old, broken, and possibly the most remarkable thing I’ve ever seen. The heads of a dozen plastic seahorses on rusted poles stick up out of the ocean water, partially shaded from the sun by the carousel’s red and white striped roof. I jump in surprise when a seagull pops its head up through one of the holes in the roof, squawking into the air. Then I smile, leaning closer to get a clearer look.

Of course I had to include an Actorward among my picks. This story pulled at my heart-strings and stayed with me long after I finished reading it. While it is complete in itself, I shamelessly admit it made me ponder all the possible futures for this pair, and I had fun writing their story in my mind. This Wish warmed my heart, made me appreciate my luck, reminded me of the good in the world and gave me hope. I’ll let you read it yourself to find out what happens in this sweet and poignant tale.
“Hello,” he says softly as he reaches his hand out for me to shake. He ducks his head, shyly looking up at me. I swear, it’s been rumored that he is even better looking in person (as if that was even remotely possible!) but oh, my lord they are right. His eyes are the palest shade of green, with gold speckles in them. So pretty. He’s got a reputation for being extremely awkward and shy when he’s not in front of the camera. I always thought it was endearing. Now…I think I’m actually in love with him.
For what seems like a century, I gape at his impossibly long “sex fingers” and then I just squeak, throwing my arms around his waist. Shit… he’s so much taller than I expected and I am cursing myself for not wearing the damn hooker heels. He laughs, rubbing my back gently. I’m swooning over how sweet he is to this random girl who knows every single detail about him. How does that not weird him out?
Remembering the list of questions Rose and Alice have made me memorize, I sniff his chest inconspicuously, sort of nuzzling him without any real shame. I’m sick, dammit. Let me smell the boy if I want! When I’ve had enough of the scent of musty laundry that’s been left wet in the dryer too long, mixed with the subtle scent of excessive fabric softener sheets to cover up said musty smell, I finally pull away when I hear my mom call out my name. Three times.
You know how celebrities have their own perfume collections and stuff? Edward’s would be totally called Le Laundrymat.
Edward Cullen’s chest vibrates with silent laughter. Holy merde, did I say that out loud?
He motions for me to come sit over on the prissy couch with him. It’s like, vomit- hued mustard gold crushed velvet adorned with rope trim and tassels that hang down the sides. Putrid.
My verbal filter is flooded with nerves. I lean closer to him, so that no one will hear and whisper, “This is the ugliest couch I’ve ever sat on, like… in my whole life.” Edward bursts into laughter, covering his mouth. He’s nodding his head emphatically, in agreement. I’m dying because the first thing I say to him is a nasty remark about the couch? Oh, no wait, I insulted his future perfume scent.
But guess what? He agrees with me!
OMG. We’re so totally bonding.
