Welcome to the first Fan Fiction Friday of 2013. We are happy to celebrate a new year with all our fellow Twific lovers here on Rob Attack. Just as there have been some updates on the RA site, there have been some changes here at FFF, as well. Midnight Cougar has been joined by five other Twific lovers to bring you 52 weeks of Twific reviews. We plan to keep your TBR list as long as HHP. LOL
With that in mind, we decided to review stories that focus on “New Beginnings.” We hope you enjoy the tales we have chosen for you. This week Cared, AllyVera, ilovealion, GingerandGreen and Wiltshire Glo have five of their favourites (four completed and one work-in-progress) to share with you!
The Breakers ~ After spending 7 years in prison, Edward gets a new start in the fishing village of Corea, Maine. Can a little girl and her mom, Bella, see beyond his past and can they all find love again…or will the ocean swallow them whole?
The ultimate new beginning, being given a second chance at life after being released from prison – a fresh start, a new place, new people…but would you trust a dangerous ex con with your young daughter?
I’m a sucker for forgiveness and redemption, so I’m on Edward’s side from the very start.
The prologue sets the mood well, we know immediately that it’s not going to be plain sailing (pun intended). He relocates and takes a job on Charlie’s fishing boat. We soon get to see his shame about his misdemeanours, his fears about his future and being accepted and we watch him tentatively build friendships despite his past.
Bella is working in the family restaurant, a single mother, stuck in the past and unable to let go of the guilt surrounding the death of her daughter’s father. Her life is good, she has a great family but something is missing… He’s survived prison, a violent past and made huge mistakes, but there’s more to him…and it kills me to see how vulnerable he is when faced with an innocent new friend.
This is the moment that is seared in my memory: he’s outside the restaurant where he’s been told to meet his new boss, Charlie.
“Hey, are you okay?” the little girl asks as she tugs on the hem of my t-shirt.
I shake my head to clear it of the melancholy thoughts creeping in and look down at her. Just gazing at her innocent and trusting face, seeing her lopsided smile, makes every dark thought I’d just had fade away until there is only her.
“Can I tell you something?” I ask and bend down so I’m level with her.
She looks back at me and nods, staring at me with her steely-blue eyes and most of the tension I’m feeling melts away. Taking a deep breath I lower my voice and whisper, “I’m kind of scared to go in there.”
Saying the words out loud is like letting all the air out of a balloon so it doesn’t pop. I take another deep breath and feel a little bit more of my nerves settle.
“Why are you scared?” she asks me and tips her head to the side as her eyes travel the length of my face. I can tell when she sees the scar on my neck. I wait for her to cringe but she only scrunches up her button nose, and the spot between her eyebrows dips down like she’s trying to figure out what happened. I see her shrug her tiny shoulders and the gesture makes my stomach flip-flop. My heart stutters in my chest when she doesn’t run away screaming. She continues her perusal and her eyes widen when she sees the ink that curls around my right bicep beneath my t-shirt.
When she looks back up at me, her eyes are warm and inviting and I have the most insane urge to reach out and give her a hug. I refrain, mostly because it’s so damn inappropriate, and also because I haven’t hugged anyone besides Esme in … hell, more years than I can remember.
She turns from me, plops down on the top step, and with no hesitation whatsoever, pats the spot next to her. I stand, staring at her until she quirks her eyebrow at me. I chuckle a little, then a bit more, when she rolls her eyes before she points again. Dutifully, because there’s no way in hell I want this little firecracker angry at me, I sit down beside her. My eyes pretty much bug out of my head when she holds her hand out for me to shake. I slip her tiny but surprisingly strong hand in mine. She smiles and it lights up her whole face. I feel my cheeks lift in the biggest smile I can ever remember.
“Mama and Xavier say I’m not allowed to talk to strangers. My name’s Peyton and we’re friends now, so that means I can talk to you.” I can’t help but laugh at how direct she is.
“My name’s Edward. It’s nice to meet you, Peyton. I could use a friend. I don’t have any of those.”
There’s no earthly reason why I just shared that with her and I sort of regret the words as soon as soon as they leave my mouth. Especially when she gasps, her eyes fill with tears, and her chin quivers as she whispers, “You don’t have any friends?”
The relationship between Edward and Peyton is so touching, but definitely not syrupy sweet; even if you’re not a fan of children you’ll want to hug Peyton to bits. She gives Edward courage and a new perspective on life. It really is a beautiful friendship.
The characters and their relationships are flawed. None of them are perfect, but I could imagine driving to Corea and meeting them all, they were so real. Edward and Bella both have ghosts to lay to rest and hurdles to overcome and there are some great twists and turns along the way.
Make no mistake though, this is a story of romance and fierce passion with a strong Bella and a sexy as hell Edward. They’re so well matched and the attraction is palpable from day one. Edward has seven years worth of loneliness to compensate for, and they both have a lot of love to give!
“There have been too many dreams to count of what I imagined being with a woman the first time after I got out of prison would be like, but even the most vivid fail miserably in comparison to the reality of Bella. Of hearing her whimpers and moans, of feeling her nipples beneath my fingers, of tasting her tongue in my mouth.
Nothing could have prepared me for the overwhelming desire to take her, claim her, that I find myself constantly wanting to do every time I’m around her. It took all I had, every bit of willpower I somehow found, to stop from going any further the other night. My body screamed in protest. Even the rough jacking-off session in the shower when I got home, where I came not once but twice, did little to relieve any of the aching need that seems to be my constant companion these days.”
The Breakers is a wonderfully uplifting story, but les16 gives us everything – drama, mystery, a few very scary moments, love and lemons – no doubt about it, Edward is very sexy, and you’ll be willing them on to happiness every step of the way.

Let’s Get Physical ~ Goal: Lose 70lbs. The Prize: One steamy night with her personal trainer. When overweight Bella is left by her husband, she is determined to lose weight with the help of Edward Masen. What starts off as payback ends up as so much more.
Fiction M – English – Romance/Drama – Bella & Edward – Chapters: 37 – Words: 211,683 – Reviews:20,717 – Favs: 7,800 – Follows: 5,019 – Updated: 03-18-11 – Published: 06-18-10 – Status: Complete – id: 6063965
The new beginning in this award-winning fic does not occur as the story begins. It is more accurate to say this story opens at the ending of life as Bella’s knows it.
We meet Bella as she watches James, her husband of 15 years, pack his bags and leave his home and his marriage, without a backward glance. Bella is understandably distraught at his departure, but before I’d even finished Chapter 1, I thought good riddance to bad rubbish; she is better off without him.
“James,” Bella croaked, “why are you doing this?”
He stopped in front of her, looked her up and down, and sneered. It was part laughter and part disgust, and she recoiled from the look on his face.
“Have you looked at yourself lately?” he said with contempt. “Bella, when we first got together you looked amazing—”
“I was fifteen,” she said, cutting him off unceremoniously.
“Now look at you?” he continued, overriding her. “I barely recognize you anymore! You know, I tried to be a good husband. I tried to be supportive as I watched you turn into the Goodyear fucking Blimp, but I can’t do it anymore. Just thinking about laying a hand on you makes me sick. I’m done.”
See what I mean about James? Don’t believe his line about trying to be a good husband. All he was good at was dishing out verbal abuse, keeping his extra-marital affairs secret, chipping away at her self-esteem and treating his wife to stony silences. In an ironic twist, leaving his wife was the best thing he could have done for her. He gave Bella the wake up call she needed, which enables her to start putting herself first for a change. This change steers Bella to her bright new beginning.
This moving story has a wonderful Bella I can identify with; she is strong and yet vulnerable. She is determined but has moments of self-doubt; she is sweet but not perfect. In order words, Lalina writes her beautifully as a real woman who discovers she needs to learn to love herself. Now, Rome wasn’t built in a day and 35-year-old Bella’s problems that slowly festered and grew over years don’t magically disappear overnight. Her days of comfort eating are no more, she joins a gym, and she has the incentive of a night of sex with hot younger Edward when she reaches her target weight to spur her on.
Her physical struggles and subsequent weight loss are only – dare I say it- the icing on the cake for Bella and this story. The real story is of Bella discovering herself and embracing her new beginning. You know how the gyms of the world tend to be packed in January and then the members trail off during the year? I guarantee you that any gym that employed this Edward as a trainer would still be full in December. Why? Trainerward, apart from being unbelievably gorgeous and sexy, is a really nice genuine guy.
This guitar playing Edward undergoes his own transformation. Bella is not his usual type physically, but at 28, he learns to look at the woman within and not just her outward appearance. He becomes captivated by her sense of humour, her sharp wit, and her warm personality. For the first time ever, he is the one doing the chasing.
Stretching Edward style:
“Edward chuckled. “Take your shoes off and lie down, Bella.” She did as she was told, and then he kneeled down next to her. “Okay, now spread your legs.”
“Come again?” she eeked out.
“Just trust me,” Edward said patiently. “We’re going to do some loosening exercises, and they can look a little odd. That’s why I brought you in here.”
Bella spread her legs, and Edward kneeled between her calves. He noticed that there was a creeping and persistent flush that was rising up her neck and was about to engulf her face any second. “Relax,” he told her soothingly before gripping her ankles and lifting them so that they were braced on the outside of his hips. “Okay, I’m going to stand up now.”
“What?” Bella’s eyes flew to his as he began to stand, keeping her ankles held in his hands. “You know Edward,” she said in a dry tone, “if you wanted to seduce me, you could have just asked.”
Edward started laughing again, more at the way she said them than at the words themselves. He knew this would probably be a somewhat uncomfortable position to be in with a virtual stranger, which is why he wanted them to be in a more private area. Bella was still looking at him like he was off his rocker, so he decided to explain.
“I need to get you loosened up, so this session is going to be mostly stretching and some resistance training.”
“Okay, so what does that have to do with you getting into position number forty-three of the Kama Sutra?”
“We’re going to jiggle you loose.”
“Jiggle?” Bella practically shrieked while simultaneously trying to yank her legs out of his grip. “I never agreed to any jiggling. Jiggling is a hard limit,” she babbled. “Just say NO to jiggling.”
“Bella, calm down!” Edward said, gripping her ankles tighter. “It will feel good. I promise.”
*Oh My – words every girl want to hear from Edward hehe*
Let’s Get Physical by Lalina has everything I look for in a story. There are well-developed characters; a realistic and thought-provoking storyline; a mix of drama, angst, fun, UST, romance and eventual sexy times.
It also has a sweet friendship that we see slowly blossom into love, plus a cast of interesting secondary characters, including a Tanya I actually like! This fic is Complete and although I read this as a WIP in 2010, it remains a favourite of mine. The summary says what starts off as payback ends up as so much more. Read this story to discover the more.

Unplanned Perfection ~ Bella and Alice were best friends, which made Bella the only girl off limits to Alice’s brother Edward. When a party the summer after graduation gets out of control, Bella’s world is turned upside down. “He doesn’t know. I don’t want him to.”
Rated: Fiction M – English – Angst/Hurt/Comfort – Bella & Edward – Chapters: 42 – Words: 407,022 – Reviews: 12,614 – Favs: 7,298 – Follows: 4,482 – Updated: 09-25-11 – Published: 08-11-10 – Status: Complete – id: 6229263
When I was thinking about a story that would fit the theme of “A New Beginning” many stories flitted through my head, but there was one that stood out like a beacon for me. This story not only gives Bella and Edward a new beginning, but also a gorgeous little three year old boy, who makes pretty much the entire Cullen Clan a happier family.
In the prologue we meet Bella who is giving birth to her son, Charlie, alone until her father can make it to the hospital. We then flash forward three years to where Bella runs into her best friend Alice after not seeing her or any of the Cullens for three years, and well, here is what happens… (from chapter one)
“Bella?” Alice’s voice was still very quiet. I took a deep breath and turned slowly on my heel to face her. I closed my eyes and tented my hands over my face with my fingers in a point between my eyebrows and my thumbs resting along my jaw.
“Motherfucking shit,” I muttered under my breath.
“Oh my God!” Alice squeaked.
I opened my eyes and she was still staring towards the front of the store where Jake had exited with Charlie.
“Oh my God, Bella. Oh my God.”
I didn’t respond. I closed my eyes again, sucked my lower lip into my mouth and bit down as hard as I could to stop my body from shaking. It didn’t work.
” Alice, I . . . . “
“Oh my God, Bella, he . . . . “
This was so not how I wanted this to happen. I was pretty sure that I never did want this to happen.
“He is, isn’t he?”
I knew what she was asking and for some unknown reason it pissed me off.
“He is what, Alice?” I asked with more venom in my voice than I had intended.
Alice looked over at me, her mouth gaping open. “How is that even possible?” I could see her mind trying frantically to figure out what exactly she was seeing.
“Alice, I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
Yeah, like she’s going to buy that.
“He’s Edward’s, isn’t he?”
Obviously, none of the Cullens know anything about Charlie, nor did they know about Bella and Edward – for good reason. Their story is a very sad one, and it is not until quite a way into UP do we actually realize just how sad. Here is a tiny glimpse from Chapter 18 from Edward’s Point of View *spoiler alert*:
“If I had known, about Charlie, Bella. I would have stayed. I would have come back,” I whispered through my tears.
After a few minutes of us both digesting my confession I spoke again, very quietly.
“I would have loved him,” I murmured. “I would have loved you.”
It was at that moment that I watched Bella completely crumble. She buried her head into my neck and sobbed. I could feel her tears drenching my t-shirt, but I didn’t care. I had finally told her. It had been nearly ten years and I was finally free of my secret. We cried together for what seemed like hours. Finally, I drifted off to sleep with her still cradled in my lap. The last thing I heard was Bella’s soft voice whispering.
“I would have loved you too.”
Mind you, Edward getting to this point is nothing if not interesting. When he first finds out about Charlie, there is no getting around the fact he acts like an asshole (and a bit of a manwhore). He does and says some deplorable things – but underneath it all, he is the one of the most passionate, deep, intelligent, loving Edwards I have ever had the pleasure to read in Fan Fiction. Watching him fall in love with his son will make your heart melt. Did I also mention he is probably one of the sexiest, mouth-watering Edwards to grace the screen of my laptop? *winks*
Bella is wonderful and strong in this story; she is not without faults, but everything she has done, she has done with the best intentions for Charlie and others. She also has a great dry sense of humour that will make you laugh, and I love how littlecat358 has given her common sense and level-headedness (she needs that level-headedness when she is dealing with Edward.. just sayin’).
The “supporting cast” of UP is fabulous as well, Jacob is one of the best I have ever read, a real friend to Bella with none of that “third wheel” business that often pops up with Jake! The Cullen family are wonderful too, in particular, Esme. With the ones we love to love, there are also the ones we love to hate, including an absolutely awful Tanya, creepy as hell James and an original character Cammy, who is just a psycho!
Unplanned Perfection is a beautifully rounded story, the author wove a wonderful tale that has drama, action, a good dollop of angst and a little bit of mystery. I loved watching these two become the couple and the family they were always destined to be.

Stolen Secrets And Shattered Dreams ~ A NYC barman views his mind reading as an isolating cancer, until he meets a lonely 28yr old trying to escape her sad reality. His life is full of harsh lessons. Hers an uphill battle, so she never complains when a beautiful boy pushes her away time and time again. EXB AH COMPLETE

Rarely have two characters been in more need of a new beginning, a fresh start, than Edward and Bella in SS&SD.
Bella hates her job and her unsympathetic boss, but is tied to both by the weight of a financial burden all the more crippling because of the reasons for it. Her father is in need of more medical care than Bella’s benefits will provide, so she can barely afford a sandwich lunch with her tough cookie friend, Rose. With no one else in the world to ease her burden, Bella makes it through each day solely by the power of her gentle optimism and amazingly kind heart.
Edward, on the other hand, hot-as-Hades barman in the establishment Bella wanders into in chapter one, looking for a quarter, is a cynic – and with very good reason. We don’t find out the reasons until much, much later in the story, and when we do, they explain a lot of the heartbreak that went on before.
This Bella and Edward only needed to be in the same vicinity once for their entire lives to be turned upside down, inside out and twisted sideways. Their beginning is steaming, explosive and life changing, although very little actually happens outside of their minds:
“”Your name is Sugarlips?” As she said it, she couldn’t help the small smile that crossed her lips. The thought of this gorgeous, sexy, infuriating creature answering to Sugarlips greatly amused her. He smiled back at her.
“You don’t believe me?”
“No, I don’t,” she challenged. The melancholy from earlier was fading away.
In a flash, he had crossed the space between them, leaning over the bar again, mere inches from her face.
“Well, why don’t you taste them to see if it’s true?” His pink tongue sneaked out and slowly wet his bottom lip.
I think my panties just disintegrated.
Bella’s mind immediately pictured feasting on his gorgeous, wet, plump lips with a hint of stubble tickling her face, then neck and the tops of her breasts, as he would surely work his way down her.
FUCK! You’re thinking about sex with him again.
Get a grip… what I’d like to grip.
STOP IT! What is wrong with me?
Bella tried to focus on the bar in front of her, but it was obvious that his words had gotten to her. As she battled to control herself, she was annoyed again at the power this stranger held over her.
“Do you just assume that every woman who walks in here wants to kiss your ass?” she snapped, angry that he happened to be right.
He laughed again, and she found herself fighting another smile when she watched his mouth because she wanted to stay mad.
“I didn’t actually think you wanted to kiss my ass. It’s cute, I know.” He winked at her. “But, if that’s your thing, I’ll happily oblige.” He stuck his hip out and playfully slapped his own butt.
He’s killing me.
Yep, I’m going to die all for two motherfucking quarters!
How the hell does he know I think it’s cute?
I wonder if he’d let me slap it?
He watched her intently. His eyes were peering into her soul. Bella wondered if he really was reading her mind, but that was impossible. Maybe he was just that good at reading people. Given the scrutiny with which he was looking at her, she’d be surprised if he didn’t know her bra size.”
Oh yes, despite being very human, Edward can read Bella’s – and many other people’s – minds. But what would that really be like?
What I love most about Foxxyj’s story is that she explores the situations she puts her characters in unflinchingly. How would it be to grow up as a child who could read minds, with a sister who saw flashes of the future? Harsh, frightening, isolating and horrifically disturbing, according to this story.
What lengths might you go to, to save the one person you love and who has loved you unconditionally? All the way past the pale in Stolen Secrets And Shattered Dreams, and when you read about Bella going there, your heart might break.
The Twilight cast in this story are vivid, extraordinary and finely drawn. They hurt, and they hurt each other, badly. But they are also sweet, sexy, funny and profane. They follow bar rules – leave their troubles at the door; call each other by the names emblazoned on their t-shirts; just be. They rock each other’s worlds until the effect they have on one another is solid and immutable.
Two things that might sway you to read this different, absorbing and exciting story:
- there is the most delightful and well deserved HEA waiting for you as a reward. The new beginning settles into a deeply satisfying end
- every chapter refers to a favourite childhood TV programme, tinting the scarily believable tale with happy nostalgia.
So, fellow fanfic addicts, if you haven’t read it yet, Stolen Secrets And Shattered Dreams is my New Year’s gift to you. Please come back and tell me if you liked it. If you read it as a WiP, I recommend re-reading as a Complete. If you do, let me know if it changes the experience for you. Hearing your feedback makes it much easier to give you more of what you want, all year round.

Dancing in the Dark ~ “You can’t start a fire, you can’t start a fire without a spark. When you think of new beginnings, many things probably come to mind—a new relationship, marriage, a new home, a new year. But, there is one particular lifetime event that is the literal interpretation of that phrase.
The birth of a child.
For most parents, the celebration of new life is preceded by many months of preparation and anticipation. However, that is not always the case. Sometimes, the conception is accidental and the entire pregnancy is concealed. While the mother will have no surprise when the blessed creation is finally revealed, that is not true for the father in such a situation.
jaxon22 has placed her Edward in this very circumstance in her new story Dancing in the Dark.
The story begins with a telephone call from the local hospital that turns Edward’s world upside down. I love the way jaxon22 explains his mental and physical reaction to the news that he might be a father.
“I try my best to explain what Dr. Weber told me about Leah. I stumble over the medical jargon she threw at me, not because I can’t remember, but because the more I think about it – the situation – the more desperately terrified I feel. As the words leave me, the reality of the situation starts to weigh even heavier. My spine is made of Jello. I’m hot again, and my skin itches. Stifling. I unzip my hoodie and shrug out of it ungracefully.
As I do, I catch the odour of the two girls I kicked out of my apartment and the underlying scent of alcohol and sweat from the night before at work. It stinks. It makes me feel filthy and fidgety. I don’t smell like a father, and I sure as shit don’t behave like one. I grab at my hair and clench my eyes shut. I want to cry again, and I hate myself for it. I’m weak and pathetic, and it makes me livid. I am furious with myself.
How could I have been so fucking stupid?”
Yep, you guessed it. Edward is not exactly father material at the beginning of this story. He does not willingly embrace his role, but it is thrust upon him in such a way that he literally can’t say, “No.”
“I have a daughter.
Whether or not I am ready for this, to do this, I have a daughter.
I could… walk away. Jesus, the very thought makes my skin prickle. Not that It matters because if I did, If I took the pussy way out-just like my father- she would still be. She would still be mine. Until my dying day, she is mine, and that realization pushes me deeper into my seat and hangs around my throat like a fucking anvil.”
When Shortcake finally enters his life, everything changes.
“I swear my masculinity is disintegrating by the hour, and I’m fairly certain my cock has taken up residence inside my body. In truth, I don’t blame it. It needs a time out for stupid behavior.”
BWAHAHAHA. I love the idea of his cock being in a time out for bad behavior. LOL.
At just seven chapters in, this WIP has a lot of potential. It took a few chapters for Bella to arrive, but as you will see, it’s definitely not love at first sight. And, in case you haven’t figured it out by now, she’s not the mother of Edward’s child.
I hope you’ll give this gem a try.
