I’ve come to the conclusion that one of the reasons I love a good Actorward is because it reflects so many of the elements I was sucked in by in the original Twilight. You know, that impossible situation of falling in love with someone you deem unattainable, someone who inhabits a completely different world to the one you live in, someone whose lifestyle is seemingly incompatible with your own. This scenario is common to both relationships: a human girl with a vampire, and an average girl with a world-famous actor. The obstacles – including the intrusion of others vying for their affections, and their own feelings of insecurity and self-doubt – seem insurmountable; but love is the ultimate leveler, as we find out in both Twilight and Episode.

AllyVera and I included it in the Best of Actorward Community, as it is just that – one of the best Actorwards in fanfiction. The Loving Kind ~ There were nine words on the square of paper. Nine simple words that I have waited over a year to hear: “I was wrong. I miss you. I love you.” My biggest mistake was falling in love with Bella. My second was telling her.

It turns out that there are many, many Aussie Authors that I love (do they put something in the water down there?), so selecting one story to review proved quite a challenge. In the end, I chose a tale that gave me something I was looking for this week. If you’ve had reason to seek out the good in the world these last few days because you’ve been mired in the blues, you couldn’t do better than to read the beautifully poignant The Loving Kind by thimbles.
This story explores the ordinary tragedies that underlie what it means to be human. thimbles touches the awfulness of grief, depression, divorce, abandonment – I don’t want to give anything away, so I’ll stop there, though she doesn’t; but she writes it with such gentle compassion, such sweetness, such humour, that while you feel the characters’ pain deeply, you never lose sight of their joy in living, either.
This is how the story begins:
“I stare stupidly at the crumpled piece of paper in my hand.
For three days, I’ve been staring at it.
Trying to imagine how she would speak the words.
Tracing my fingertips over the strokes made by her pen.
Crumpling it up.
Tossing it in the trash.
Retrieving it.
Carefully smoothing out the creases.
There are three lines of an all too familiar scrawl spread across it. Her messy scribble is as familiar to me as my own neat hand. I can see her in my mind’s eye; the odd way she holds her pen, her thumb curling up over the top of her third finger; the silly spin she perfected after months and months of frustration and pens flying across our table; the tilt of her head as she watches the words emerge from the nib.
I wonder if she was smiling as she wrote these lines. Or was she crying? Sobbing, as I did when I first caught sight of them? Perhaps her face was set with the look of stubborn determination that she wore so well?
I wonder how many times she set her pen to paper before she finally slid it under my door. Did she spend hours, days, and weeks agonizing over it? Or did she simply determine what she needed to do, and carry it out with the ruthless efficiency with which she left me?
Now, I know what you’re thinking: “This is an angst fest, right? Tragedy, misery, pain and she leaves him??” Fear not. thimbles is an author who believes passionately in hope. She declares it on her author profile, and she threads it through her lovely words like silk in a tapestry.
The Loving Kind is a happy story.This is how chapter one ends:
“Sweetheart, don’t cry,” I beg.
“Edward.”
“I’m here.”
“Edward.”
“Bella, I’m here.”
“I’m s-s-so sorry, Edward. I was wrong. I … I was so t-terribly wrong, and I’m so very sorry.”
The words are out of my mouth before I even have a chance to think them through.
“I forgive you.”
Scratch the surface of anyone’s life, and the hardships they’ve endured will emerge. thimbles’ talent is in taking the ordinary pain and pleasure of truly believable characters, and turning it into a moving story everyone can relate to. Her Edward and Bella are so real, you could have met them at your local coffee shop. Her supporting cast could be friends of yours. Mmmm, and Garrett speaks with a glorious Australian accent, so even when he’s a jerk, you could eat him.
You know, if The Loving Kind was a film script, Rob would leap at it; I guarantee it. Go on – read it! You’ll feel better, and that’s a promise.

Bella is a spirited, intelligent writer who loves to climb and when she moves to Seattle, finds a home away from home at her indoor local climbing wall. There she easily meets new friends but also quite literally stumbles over an arrogant guy who gets under her skin. Their initial meeting leaves them antagonistic towards each other after he sends her sprawling and earns his nickname – The Bulldozer, but it’s his arrogance that really winds Bella up.
Their second meeting had me chuckling again, he really knows how to push her buttons!
“I jump back as far as I can into the bar, spitting my lime wedge out into my hand in a rather unladylike fashion. “You!” I splutter. “You!”
Apparently I’m incapable of anything but single syllables around this man.
The Bulldozer smirks back at me. “Huh. I almost didn’t recognize you, when you’re not on your knees.” He goes back to sucking on the lime wedge, smirking crookedly.
“What?!” I shriek. “You…you…”
“You know, if you’re going to be panting at me, I’d prefer you used my real name,” he says cockily. Still smirking.
Damn, rude, bulldozing, Smirky McSmirkerston.
That’s it. Here’s me, reaching the end of my tether.
“You…asshole!”
The Bulldozer places his lime wedge back on the counter, snickering. “No. Actually, it’s Edward. And you are?”
I glare back at him, rising to my full height in heels. Which still isn’t very high.
“Leaving.””
I’m a complete sucker for redemption and he’s definitely got his work cut out for him to be seen in a different light if he wants to get into Bella’s good books, which of course, he does! She is forced to accept his help, more than once, but no matter how intriguing and attractive she finds him, his cocky attitude makes her determined to keep him at a distance. It’s got to be said, this Edward is so charming, it’s hard not to giggle at his behaviour – even when we admire Bella’s feistiness while she’s bringing him down a peg or two. They’re well matched and he soon learns to respect her, as well as her climbing skills…
“I’ve got two moves to go. I look for the next one and again, its way out of my reach. I’d need to be at full extension on both my right arm and leg to get it. I settle into the relatively comfortable position I’m in and re-chalk my hands, one at a time. I need to think.
I’m aware of two pairs of eyes still on me. Over my shoulder, I hear a low chuckle.
“You seem to be having a few problems there,” the cocky voice over my shoulder points out.
“No shit,” I mutter under my breath.
“You know,” starts Emmett, seemingly through a mouthful of chips. “If you just switch feet—”
“No helping.” The Bulldozer cuts him off. “If the route is so—what was it—mediocre, she doesn’t need any help, does she?” His voice is full of over-the-top confidence. We’re talking beyond cocky now. He’s bordering on impertinent.
That provides the incentive I need. There is no way I’m letting this fucker—the wall or the man—get the better of me.”
It soon becomes clear though, that something more is going on. Gradually MagTwi78 unveils snippets of Bella’s past – her reason for starting over and why she is, at times, defensive and wary. She’s very easy to like and relate to.
So, what’s Edward’s story? Ah, now that would be telling, you’ll have to read it yourself…and at 17 chapters in, I’m hooked! There are clues in his behaviour that all is not well, but he isn’t readily prepared to bare his soul.
What I can tell you is that it’s easy to get swept up in their world, a bunch of friends who climb and support each other.
I’ve even learnt some climbing phrases and techniques (that I’m never going to attempt!) and if you’re really curious, take a quick peek at MagTwi78’s Facebook group where she may have some pictures of naked climbers! Those muscles…strong shoulders…great imagery! Joking aside, I’m find I’m intrigued by their sport, and find the setting for the story interesting and refreshing.
It’s not all about the climb though, this is great storytelling with moments of sadness and reflection; each chapter infused with gentle humour. It’s a fun read and I’m always thrilled when an update arrives.

I am going to do something a little different this week and start my review off with a taste of the story. Here we meet Bella and Alice – Alice is Bella’s Madam (for want of a better word) and she has just acquired a new “client” for Bella.

“You look like the cat that swallowed the canary.” I said as I sat down and crossed my legs, my right leg bouncing in anticipation of the assignment I was about to hear about.
“The cat yes, but he’s definitely not a canary. And it will not be me doing the swallowing sweetheart.”
“Touche.” I replied. No, Alice never did the swallowing. “Who is he?”
She hesitated before smiling again. Her eyes were sparkling. He must be very well known to be eliciting this type of response from Alice. She’d dealt with famous people before, nothing and no one ruffled her feathers. This one though, this one was clearly very different.
“Let me just start by saying that confidentiality is paramount.”
“Of course.” In Alice’s line of business that was a given. And I say ‘Alice’s line of business’ instead of ‘my line of business’ because this was only a side gig for me. ‘This’ being the highly lucrative, highly frowned upon business of an ‘escort’ agency.
“He can’t know that you do this for a living.”
“I don’t.”
“You know what I mean. He cannot know that you’re being paid.”
“Then who’s paying?”
“That’s none of your concern.”
“Plausible deniability?” I asked.
“Something like that.” He must be in a position of power then. One where morality, or the appearance there of was important. Politician perhaps?
“So I’m not being employed as eye candy then?”
“Definitely not working as eye candy on this one. There will be no public outings.”
That meant sex. While most of the jobs I did for Alice over the years had been to strictly escort men, I did occasionally take on jobs that required ‘more’, but only when the terms suited me.
“Right. Do I know this person?”
“Personally?” She clarified.
“No, no. I assume they’re a public figure of some description?”
Alice failed to contain the grin. “Yes, definitely a public figure. Very public. Yes, you are familiar with them.”
“Married?” I despised the married ones.
“Not anymore.” Good.
“Politician?”
“Yes.”
“Democrat or republican?”
“Does it matter?” Honestly?
“As long as he’s not hideous, or ancient then no. Unless there’ll be time for a lot of talk.”
“I wouldn’t expect much talking. Just fucking.” She was blunt.
“Just tell me who it is already.”
“I need to know if you’re available first.”
“When?”
“Sunday night.”
“Sure, why not?”
She hesitated then took a deep breath looking me straight in the eye. “Edwardcullen,” she said so quickly I barely heard her.
“Excuse me?” I said, uncrossing my legs and scooting my ass to the front of my chair, close to falling off, completely unsure of whether I heard her correctly.
“Edward…Cullen,” she said again, very slowly and deliberately this time. Before looking disgustingly smug.
Holy mother of….
“President Edward Cullen?”
She simply nodded.
I blinked several times as my heart began hammering in my chest. Edward Cullen. President Edward Cullen. President of the motherfucking United States of America, Edward Cullen. Leader of the free world, Edward Cullen. Arguably the most powerful man in the world.
Well, fuck me.”
Rushed has certainly created a story with a unique premise; I can’t help but be in awe of her for dealing with this subject matter so incredibly well. The fact that Rushed is Australian only serves to deepen my admiration.
I will confess that I rarely read stories where Bella is a prostitute, mainly because it’s been hard to like her as a character, but in The American President, it is Bella’s character that sold the story to me. I greatly admire her in this fic. She loves fiercely, is independent, resourceful, confident and very loyal.
Edward, of course, is in his own league – not only is he the most powerful man in the Western World, but he is charming, genuine, sexy and so sweet. Oh, and he has great hands – just ask Bella (chapter three).
These two embark on a liaison that at first originates out of necessity on both their parts, but quickly turns into something much deeper. So much deeper, in fact, that Bella ends up making the ultimate sacrifice for the man she loves. However, when it comes to the crunch, I expect Edward will make sacrifices for the loves of his life as well.
It isn’t a smooth road for these two, but we are at the point in this WIP story where we can see the ending they both truly deserve.

My only concern is with Episode…does anybody know how much longer for it to complete, as it seems to be taking a long time to finish.

I haven’t read the Loving Kind, but I was completely engrossed in Figmetum by Thimbles (it has a nontraditional HEA that I had to think on for a bit before I was satisfied – but GAH – amazing writing!) and now I want to read everything she’s written! I LOVED Episode when I read it a while ago, but it was on hiatus for a bit – is it back to updating?

Ooooh I haven’t heard of Eighteen by Landdownunder, but I love her fic Off Piste! (Skiward *nods* UNF ) I reread it this summer during the Olympics and was reminded how good it is!
Off Piste – Edward is a professional skier, Bella is an ex-Olympian still involved in the industry. They haven’t seen each other since one memorable encounter a few years ago; now the Vancouver Winter Olympics will have them sharing the same slopes once again. AH

How fitting that I came across this site today of all days and to see so many Aussie Authors being rec’d. Some are old favourites of mine and a few I’m only reading about for the first time today. I’ve added those on to my alert list.
FoxxyJ, mpg, BoydBlog, Alby Mangroves, Anna Faze, KiyaRaven, Edwardsisobel are just a few that lookout for religiously with karry4harry & xxxKittyMasenxxx both new but worthy of mention.
Now to sit back and relax on this very wet QLD (Gold Coast) Australia Day and catch up on some of the New Aussie authors I’ve now found and some of my old favourites just like Evolve by BoydBlog that I had just finished reading before I hit Twitter and found this site.

I would recommend absolutely anything by Windchymes – I have read The Decision, Distractions, and Blood Lines and floved them all. This author dives into canon Edward and with tiny little “what if” twists, brings up gems of insight that develop his character and his relationship with Bella in delicious, emotionally satisfying ways. In “The Decision”, for example, when Edward fled Forks after that first biology class he didn’t come back, but he encounters Bella a few years later. “Distractions” is one of my favorite New Moon alternatives. I’m sort of saving “The Keepsake” for a rainy fic day – I know I will love it. And if you enjoy Daddyward, in “Blood Lines” you’ll get such beautiful, juicy moments (that IMO SM totally gypped us out of) that I think of this story as as Daddyward porn – VAMPIRE Daddyward, yet! Sigh.

I came across this very intense story by Romanian author VioAlexandru…it is not BDSM but there is certainly a theme of dominance and submission….this is VioAlexandru’s first and only story (hopefully we can get her to write more) and not written in her native language but in English (and very well done)….if you like her story please send her some love as this is a very under reviewed story….it is an intriguing story of romance and mystery between a husband and wife…http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5396410/1/A-Letter-to-My-Husband…Well, they’re married.
