Fan Fiction, Sex Gods and Single Girls ~ After a mortifyingly awkward first meeting, fanfiction writer & new teacher, Bella, finds story inspiration in her hot-headed, player-of-a-neighbor. I recently spent the past weekend immersed in the lives of this Bella and Edward. The story is very long—821 pages as a PDF—but don’t allow the length to discourage you. There were so many instances in this story where I laughed out loud. The zany antics of Edward and Bella, plus their supporting cast of characters, was very refreshing. The jokes were real and not forced, and shockingly surprising, as bannerday breathed new life into the canon storyline. Her subtle and not-so-subtle twists and Twilight references made for a striking contrast. I found myself thrilled with her ingenuity. I haven’t seen a story of this magnitude in quite some time, nor had one touch me as deeply.
The premise is this: Bella, a shy, virginal, twenty-three-year-old high school English teacher, moves to Seattle to start her new job. Her mother and stepfather have purchased a townhome for her and Jake helps her move in. She also writes fanfiction stories, based on her favorite novels, Stardusted, with the characters of Ethan and Stella. Jake’s involved with Leah, which is a huge sigh of relief rather than the same tired old triangle. The townhome is situated across the street from Edward’s, who’s a twenty-eight-year-old man-whore—he’s rich, drives a flashy car, dresses to the nines and is the most good-looking man Bella’s ever laid eyes on. Surprise, surprise! When Bella pulls up on moving-in day in her rusty old bomb of a pickup, backfiring and making explosive sounds, she’s unknowingly interrupting a romantic interlude for Edward and his flavor-of-the-night. Here’s a peek at their first, also explosive, meeting:
Meanwhile, at the house across the way, and completely unbeknownst to Bella, Edward had slammed the front door of his house open violently. You would normally think of slamming a door shut, but no, he had actually slammed that door open, quite probably putting a dent into the drywall with the large, decorative doorknob as it struck.
He began striding down the front walkway that led to his driveway, curling his fists tightly into dangerous weapons as he began yelling.
“Hey! Hey, you! Hey, asshole!”
Of course the driver of the truck was oblivious as the engine noisily rumbled and chugged and sputtered. Edward could see the guy sitting in the front seat, baseball cap on his head, complacently disturbing the peace of the entire fucking neighborhood.
Edward realized too late that he had left his home wearing only the whisper-light, flowing black silk pajama pants he had pulled on. Other than that he was nude. And barefoot. His thoughts were in a whirl as he stalked down his driveway and across the roughly paved street toward the nightmare truck in his bare feet.
Just you wait… Crap! …until I get my hands on you… Ouch! …you senseless idiot… Shit! …ruining my perfectly good morning… Ow! …and forcing me… Goddammit! …to walk across… Hell! …this shittily paved street… Ahh! …in my bare feet… Sonofabitch! …until they’re good and goddamned shredded. Fuck!
He came up on the back end of the old red truck, right near the exhaust pipe and was met with two heartstopping blasts, followed by thoughts on how best to greet the idiot behind the wheel.
Oh, I am so going to deck you the minute you get out of that truck, a-hole!
Bella was just about to scream, “Will you just shut the hell up?” when she realized someone had begun banging on her door, startling her into inaction.
Edward’s yells and bangs on the door had been useless. The dude had just been sitting there in his truck, ignoring him. He couldn’t even see the guy clearly with the glare on the window. He would just have to open the door himself so he could more effectively chew the guy’s ass out.
Bella’s door was suddenly wrenched open, taking her by surprise.
Yet that was nothing compared to the string of abusive profanities that followed and absolutely stunned Bella as she
turned to climb out of the cab.
“Hey, Asshole! Get the fucking hell out of the goddamned, motherfucking, piece-of-shit, cockblocking truck!”
Bella scrambled out of the truck, looking up and facing the source of the screaming to see what was wrong and why this person was yelling at the top of his lungs.
The volatile young man, standing just outside the driver’s door and spewing the invectives, was red-faced and breathing hard as he spit the words out viciously. The vein in his forehead was bulging and throbbing as he ranted.
Suddenly his eyes widened in surprise as he yelled and looked at her more carefully.
Edward had realized two things while yelling:
First, he had noticed that the guy exiting the truck was built rather slightly; only about five and a half feet tall at the very most.
The second thing Edward had realized was that the guy was a girl.
Edward and Bella get off on the wrong foot, and it only goes downhill from there. The hilarity of the situation is truly spot-on. Within the course of a couple of days, Bella sees three different women leaving Edward’s house. After some more hateful exchanges between the two of them, she decides to begin a new fanfiction story, “From Hate to Heat”, with Edward as the star. She begins detailing the story of when she met him, with herself as Stella, and Edward as Ethan. She can’t help but be attracted to Edward, asshole extraordinaire though he is. I mean, who could resist Edward—or Ethan, for that matter?
How they progress from enemies to friends to lovers is a spectacular journey. There are many more embarrassing situations, with just the right touch of angst and drama to make it more interesting. I waited until this story was finished last week and I want to say, right here and now, that it was well worth the two years it took for completion.
I was truly engaged in the lives of these characters and felt the author showcased appropriately their maturing personalities. The story is told in third-person, truly a favorite of mine, and bannerday really fleshes out their psyches. She’s able to display the inner minds of both Bella and Edward, revealing the full picture instantaneously, instead of having to wait for alternate and/or overlapping points of view.
My hat’s off to you, dear bannerday, for writing such a compelling literary masterpiece, which made me laugh, cry, smile, and then laugh some more. Please read this wonderful story and leave her some love. Tell her “mauigirl60” sent you!

Fire & Ice ~ FOURTH in the Gravity Series. When one of their own is threatened, the crew will have to travel halfway around the globe to get them back. What they find will have them racing against the odds to save more than just one life. AH E/B Series.
Twilight, M, English, Adventure & Romance, chapters: 12, words: 86k+, favs: 574, follows: 648, updated: 27 November published: Oct 20, Bella, Edward
So many of my friends here in fanficland know how devoted I am to the Edward from drotuno’s Gravity series. Mercward, as he’s known to his fans, stole my heart many moons ago and I don’t want it back! So, imagine my delight, after a two year break, when Deb (drotuno) announced a fourth book in the series…let’s just say there was a lot of dancing, flailing and fangirling in my kitchen that day!
For those of you who have yet to delve into this epic series, it’s an action and adventure rollercoaster. The first part was Blood & Glory, which threw Edward and Bella together in the most difficult of circumstances. Edward being a member of a mercinary group, all ex-soldiers, honourable and fierce; Bella heading up a PI business with a team of trusted and intelligent women by her side. I loved it from the first chapter. The following two stories have been equally gripping, sometimes dark, each telling a stand alone story but at the very heart of everything is the thread of deep love and the connection between Edward and Bella. Earlier this summer I reviewed them as my summer read. (Read previous review Here)
Onto the new WiP, number four, Fire & Ice …well, drotuno does not disappoint! It picks up in real time, two years on from number three, Smoke & Mirrors, and the team is as strong as ever, working together, but easing in to a break for the summer, tidying up loose ends and taking only small jobs. Unfortunately things are never that straightforward, when they fear for the safety of Carlisle, who’s on a business trip to Moscow (just so you know, this Daddy C has to be one of my favourite Carlisles in the fic world, so I’m all for them watching his back! *winks*). It seems they are right to be wary and Carlisle may just be in need of their expertise and assistance…and so the adventure begins…
The story is as tense, nerve-wracking and fear inducing as ever, but still, for me, the relationship between Edward and Bella is magical and underpins everything. Sexy as hell? Yep, that too! Beyond that, the extended family is not only believable and well written, but full of well-rounded characters who each have their place and belong in the team. They matter to me, Deb has made me care about them.
This short excerpt is about as spoiler-free as I could find, but shows the tenderness and understanding that comes from a long-term relationship.
My eyes drifted back to my husband. Throughout the years, we’d learned to trust our gut instincts. He trusted mine to the ends of the earth and back, but I relied upon his. And to see him worried about his dad was wrecking me. I wanted to pluck Carlisle and Esme out of Moscow and set them down in front of him, if only to take away the dark look on Edward’s face.
He clawed at his hair, pulling it up off his forehead.
“You’re gonna pull it all out. Go have Aunt Kate cut it, Edward. Take a break, or I’m gonna use Bethy’s hair thingys to keep it out of your eyes,” I threatened him, leaning in to kiss his cheek. “I’ve got this. And leave your phone in case your dad calls.”
His grin was every bit the combination adorable and sexy, not to mention a touch disbelieving as to whether or not I’d meant it.
“Barrettes with flowers on them, handsome. I’m not kidding,” I chortled, shoving at him until he got up.
“Bella…” he started to argue, but leaned down to kiss my lips. “Just…let me know if you find something.”
“Yes, sir,” I answered against his lips and then watched him as he left the room.
Although Deb advises reading the series in order, if you really want to, I believe that this could be read as a stand alone story. The previous stories are referenced but also explained in context. However, I do think you would be missing out on a great read if you overlooked the first three books. It’s not all lightness and fluff, there are dark moments, difficult challenges within the story lines but the relationships are strong throughout.
Here’s what drotuno had to say in her A/N at the beginning of Fire & Ice:
“…I reread the whole series myself, reread just about every review, and I wanted to step back a bit, go back to how Blood & Glory felt…and Sin & Innocence, too, if I’m still being honest. I will warn you that this is as dark as the ones before it – darker maybe – but I’m not here to rip Mercward and Sweetness apart with drama aimed at their marriage. That’s not how I work. We are stepping back into their lives just as we’ve done before, but this plot is like the ones before it – action, adventure, violence, foul language and lemony goodness (pfft! like that would change). If those aren’t your thing, then this isn’t for you. I STRONGLY suggest that you read the others before attempting to dive into this one.”
If you’ve got a long weekend and really want a good read to get your teeth into, it’s well worth the time, whether you start at the very beginning – or you’re already a Mercward devotee and want to join us every Wednesday and Sunday for Fire & Ice updates.
If you need a visual of Mercward, here he is ladies…
Tension ~ Take up all slack and hold on—a possible fall is anticipated. After three years of drifting alone, Edward returns to Upstate New York to see about a girl, a promise to his brother. He should have stayed hidden. EPOV. Adult content
Twilight – Rated: M – English – Drama/Romance – Chapters: 12 – Words: 23,822 – Reviews: 648 – Favs: 378 – Follows: 644 – Updated: 18h ago – Published: Sep 2 – Bella, Edward – Complete
I don’t even know where to begin with this twelve chapter story. It’s different, intriguing, incredibly well written and kinda mind-blowing. If you want cute, fluffy and a yellow brick road then avoid it like the plague! If however, you’re happy to upset your own equilibrium and take a chance, then read away. It’s well named, as Tension runs right through the story as well as Edward’s narrative.
Edward is adrift, looking for some closure and revisiting old haunts, disaffected and alone – when he meets a girl he doesn’t know if he can trust.
I pull my Sig from my waistband and clear the safety.
This is all wrong.
Alert now, I hear muffled noise from the main house to the right. Through the dirty porch screen I see the shabby yellow curtains are drawn on all four front windows. Eyes scanning, I quietly ascend the three steps and pull open the metal porch door. It creaks and whines, alerting the whole damn town that I’m here. The noise inside continues: running water, metal on metal, and maybe a voice under it all.
I cock the gun and point it at the floor in front of me. Taking one last check of my back, I grab the front door handle. It’s ripped from my hand. In it’s place stands a slim brunette dripping on the threshold with a blue towel wrapped around her body.
Her chin lifts as she scans me from the chest up. We stare at each other. Her eyes are dark, giving away nothing. Light freckles cover a slight nose against pale skin. My attention slides down to her lips when her teeth tug on the bottom one and it turns a darker shade of pink. My forefinger slides to the trigger.
“You’ll do.” She grabs my left hand and tugs me through the door.
For more than that you’ll have to read, as I really don’t want to spoil it. It’s refreshing and had me wanting to reread immediately after I finished to see what I’d missed, rethink my assumptions and just to savour the quality writing. I read the final chapter as it posted, right before going to sleep, when I awoke I was still mulling it over in my mind; it made me think. Ta Paixao wasn’t afraid to follow through on her vision and tell the story her way, I’m glad she did.

It’s not possible to count my current WIP reading list using my fingers and toes alone. I glimpse an interesting summary, an intriguing or refreshing opening paragraph, and I convince myself it will be just one more hit…I can handle it! 🙂 Here is a quick look at three stories that I was recently powerless to resist…
I’m sure you have guessed it from the summary above that Bella is the lucky coffee girl, and Hollywood’s most eligible bachelor is Edward, admittedly, one of the reasons I was drawn to this fic. Perhaps I should describe Edward as lucky too, as he hit the jackpot in his personal life by placing an order for a special cup of coffee. Bella is a creative college student who also takes her job as a barista seriously; she is intelligent, independent, quirky, and as warm as the sweet muffins she serves. Let’s see how she captures Actorward’s eye as she literally falls hard for him…
A couple of other early risers and a few regulars came and went. I was singing along with Adele when a throat cleared behind me and caused me to jump. My foot caught on one of the mats and I fell to the ground, shrieking the whole way down.
“Are you okay?” an intense baritone voice asked.
“Yeah,” I laughed. “Happens to me all the time. Just another day in the life of a graceless swan.”
Even though I could laugh at the situation I found myself in, I couldn’t prevent the rush of blood to my skin when I looked up at the witness to my clumsiness. When our eyes met, I was lost. He was devastatingly handsome.
Mossy green eyes accompanied the sexiest voice I’d ever heard next to Vin Diesel’s. That man’s voice could melt the panties or boxers off anyone. I was confident of that. As I stood, I took in the rest of the most beautiful man I’d ever seen.
Besides those gorgeous peepers that were encased by thick eyebrows, he had a jaw line that begged to be licked. It was covered with a couple of day’s worth of whiskers that were a few shades lighter than his milk chocolate brows. His nose was crooked and had most likely been broken more than once, but it just added to his beauty. His lips were a natural and soft pink. They were plump and oh-so-kissable.
He was wearing an old and holey, but obviously loved, black t-shirt and a pair of wrinkled blue jeans. A baseball cap covered his unruly locks, and he was tall; taller than I expected him to be. But above all that, he was none other than Edward Cullen: actor extraordinaire and GQ’s most eligible bachelor. Everyone and their grandma wanted to date him. The man was sex personified…and he had just witnessed me making a fool out of myself.
It wasn’t like I even considered myself in his league. I wasn’t ugly by any means; I considered myself to be pretty average. But I wasn’t going to be walking the catwalk anytime. Like, ever. At just over five feet tall and add in my inability to walk a straight line, you would never see me on the runway, not that I wanted to be up there anyway.
After my blatant perusal of his body, I met his eyes again; the smirk on his face definitely didn’t help the blush on my face lessen. “What can I get for you?”
“I’ll have a large nonfat café au lait.”
….And so it begins. Edward is swoon inducing! This “mama’s boy” even brings his mother in to the coffeehouse to meet Bella – how sweet is that? The playful banter and teasing between Coffee Girl and Eddie is fun to read as they fall hard and fast for each other. To date, they have only shared kisses. Actually, that’s a poor turn of phrase to use, as there is nothing only about those amazing, toe-curling, sensual kisses.
According to Deebelle1, “This is mainly a fluffy romance. There will be small bits of angst but it’s not drawn out…I’m an angst wimp, too. You’ll have a little bit of everything, but overall it’s just a good old fashion romance.” Those last four words from the author explain why I’m enjoying this story so much – I raise my skinny latte to toast good old fashion romance!
Oh, and Deebelle1 worked as a coffee girl in LA and met many stars in her time. She mentions a star at the start of each chapter, revealing what kind of customer they were, and we’ve certainly learned some interesting tidbits, such as in chapter two, “Today’s Hollywood star is Neil Patrick Harris…aka The Dick.” lol These personal anecdotes certainly add a nice touch to the story…just like a happy face in coffee foam!
As the lovely actress/singer Kristin Chenoweth tells us, “…love can be yours if you step up to the counter and order…” So, what are you waiting for?
Easy as Pie ~ Edward Masen: successful actor, admired by many, desired by thousands; he had everything he could have possibly wanted, except … happiness. One night, while trying to escape his crazy life, he literally made a “right” turn, which led him to Little Bell. Could finding that happiness really be as easy as pie?
This is another Actorward I am currently enjoying very much. Bella is a student making ends meet by baking and waitressing in “Easy as Pie”, and Edward is a famous actor in need of a break.
Now, on the face of it you might consider this and the storyline above to be similar, but honestly, apart from their occupations and initial meeting, these stories are as different as lemon meringue pie from strawberry rhubarb crumble. It’s a completely different kettle of fish, or in this case, plate of pie.
When pie-loving Edward “literally made a ‘right’ turn” and walked in the door of the small coffee shop, “Easy as Pie”, he was in dire need of a break from his regimented life…“ Away from the world of Edward Masen and everything it represented.”
I stopped at a corner, waiting for the light, when a mouth-watering aroma filled the air. I glanced to the right and saw a small coffee shop with the sign Easy as Pie lit up in the window.
Pie. I loved pie. I really loved pie.
I never got to eat pie anymore. Apparently, refined sugar would be the death of me; at least according to the personal trainer the studio insisted I needed for my next role, who designed a hell-on-earth daily routine I was supposed to be following religiously. Now my diet consisted of vegetables, fruit, and fish. I was hungry all the time and lately had been questioning why I had agreed to do this next role. I snuck in the occasional sandwich because, really, how bad could a sandwich be for you? I snorted, remembering James’ reaction to that innocent remark. Really bad, it would seem. At least his fifteen minute speech about dedication and sacrifice for the part, seemed to indicate that.
But I missed dairy. Bread. Pasta. Meat. And pie.
I hesitated; James wasn’t here right now and I wanted pie. I really wanted pie.
After all, I was going to hell anyway. Might as well do it thoroughly.
I headed toward the small diner and stepped inside, breathing in deeply. My mouth instantly began to water. I walked to the back and sat in a secluded, corner booth, grabbing up a menu and burying my face in it. After a few minutes I looked around. The place was fairly deserted, with only a few tables taken and once again, no one was looking at me. I sighed and put the down the menu, taking in my surroundings. Clean and warm, there were bookshelves along one wall with a sign over them saying ‘Help Yourself While You’re Here’, a long counter with stools opposite it, and the rest of the restaurant was tables and booths like the one I was sitting in. Curious, I got up and perused the shelves. Grinning, I grabbed a book I had been meaning to read and sat back down. I had just opened up the cover when a gentle voice startled me.
I looked up into the deepest brown eyes I had ever seen. They were warm and welcoming as they gazed at me and I waited for the sure widening that would happen when they recognized who I was, but it never came. Instead they remained warm and kind. They were framed by long lashes and as I looked into them I had the overwhelming sense of something inside me settling into place. A small voice in my head said the word home, and I was mystified because of it, trying to figure out why that had happened. Suddenly, I noticed the furrow appear between those lovely eyes and I realized I had been staring and not speaking for far too long.
Blinking, I cleared my throat and smiled warily at girl in front of me. “Please.”
Her answering smile was wide. “Anything else?”
“You have pie?”
Her smile got wider. “Not just any pie. Real homemade pies. Best in the city. I just took one out of the oven.”
How could I resist that?
He may have meant the pie that time, but it’s not long before he also cannot resist the baker…Bella. She is a hard working, very sweet, talented girl, struggling to overcome the difficult hand life has dealt her. He is struggling to cope with his lifestyle – that of a megastar and heartthrob – and Bella blows a breath of fresh air in his stuffy and controlled world; she becomes his catalyst for change. Their emotions run deep very quickly…falling for each other is as easy as pie, but the reality they are soon forced to face is anything but. Have no fear about the future as Edward’s Eternal assures us she believes in HEA for Little Bell and Pie Guy.
Go on, don’t try to resist…serve yourself a large helping of this delicious story.
And now for something completely different…
IMHO it takes a special kind of story to be named the Best HEA in an angst contest, and that’s what we have right here ladies…a special kind of story. Another Love captivated me in the contest and I can’t tell you how pleased I am that it is being continued.
I’m not going to tell you anything at all about the premise as that would only take away from your pleasure of slowly discovering it yourself. I will tell you, though, that this unique, beautifully told story will make you feel; it will pull at your heartstrings and make you smile, I know, for that’s what it did to me.
Another Love is told from EPOV, in the present, in dream sequences and in flashbacks. Sparklymeg made me feel as though I lived through each one of those moments – and all the intense emotions to go along with them – with Edward, and now I can’t wait to experience his future.
Here is a spoiler-free peek at Edward…
EPOV October 2005
I wander back into the living room, beer in hand, and ponder how I can get people to leave. It’s almost midnight, and I have to be up really early.
Okay, yeah. I definitely am a party pooper.
I’m almost knocked off my feet when a hard body stumbles into me. I steady myself to find Emmett McCarty, high, drunk, or both, wrapping his arms around me.
“Cullen! You made it man!”
Why do people keep saying that to me? Am I that obvious?
Emmett and I do the loose, side, male hug thing and he starts prattling on about his football game last week. I’m not really paying any attention though, because I’m distracted by a commotion on the other side of the room.
That smarmy fucker, James, from my Ethics in Education class, has some poor girl pressed against the window frame, his hands wandering down the sides of her body. She looks uncomfortable, her head moving from side to side. I realize he’s trying to kiss her and she’s resisting.
I’m over there before I even realize I have moved, my hand firm on his shoulder, pulling him away.
“Hey man, I don’t think she’s interested.”
James stumbles, and looks up at me. He’s glassy eyed, intoxicated, and his features twist into an expression of sheer confusion. Recognition dawns on his face, and he straightens up.
“She with you, man?”
“Yeah, she is, so back off.”
The words tumble out of my mouth before I realize what I’m saying. In my peripheral vision I can see the girls eyes widening, and I hear a breath catch in her throat.
James mumbles something incoherent and stumbles away.
I turn back; only to be faced with one of the most beautiful girls I have ever laid eyes on.
Guess this party won’t be so bad after all.
Convinced she was headed to permanent residency in Loserville, Bella Swan would have done anything to fit in with the popular crowd. What if she was presented with an opportunity to do just that? Would she take it happily or would she stop and think about the person she was leaving behind? Inspired by 13 going on 30. Romance, drama, humor and a little bit of everything.
