Random Rita ~ Saturday Feature Fic!

ROB ATTACK

Evenin’, ladies!

Yeah, it’s been awhile and, after findin’ myself sidetracked for so long, my plan is to ease back up onto the road with shorter but, hopefully, more frequent recs!

Right off the bat, I’m bringin’ you a story that will absolutely break your heart! Heed the author’s warnin’:

MAJOR ANGST. GRAPHIC VAMPIRE VIOLENCE
This story is very angsty and has scenes of extreme violence against vampires and humans. Consider yourself warned.
Told mostly from Edward’s POV with some insight from Carlisle.

Why would I do that to you, you might ask?  Because, when I stumble upon a story this deep and so well written, I’m compelled to share the author’s awesome talent with as broad an audience as possible!

Plus, I’m an AngstH00r…shoot me!ROB ATTACKhttps://www.fanfiction.net/s/6183041/1/The-Guard

The newborn battle is over and Bella is dead. Can Edward survive without her? How can the Cullens save Edward from himself and his bad decisions. Does he want to be saved? Can Edward find another reason to live? MAJOR ANGST. GRAPHIC VAMPIRE VIOLENCE

Rated: Fiction M – English – Angst/Hurt/Comfort – Edward, Bella – Chapters: 20 – Words: 140,717 – Reviews: 152 – Favs: 86 – Follows: 49 – Updated: Jan 14, 2011 – Published: Jul 28, 2010 – Status: Complete – id: 6183041

After Bella’s death, the Cullens are beside themselves tryin’ to keep Edward from doin’ anything stupid!

My family, much to my dismay, made sure running off to Italy would not be easy. My passport was confiscated, I was under twenty-four hour surveillance by one or more of them at any given time; and Alice was always watching. I was told and retold how Bella would not have wanted me to end my own life, how horrified she would be that her death would be the catalyst for my own demise. But the most persuasive argument came from Esme, who with a mother’s understanding and love, inspired me to believe that it was my duty to carry on Bella’s memory for all of eternity. I OWED her. If not I, then who would? She was an only child, her parents would be dead within the next half century, there was no one else, no other family. It was my duty to remember her, how she looked, her warm liquid, brown eyes, her dark mahogany hair, her pale complexion and beautiful full lips, and more importantly, her beautiful soul, her unselfishness, her kindness, her forgiving nature and how she loved me, passionately and without reservation; even her stubbornness and her endearing clumsiness that was so uniquely her. It was my duty to remember these things. With my head cradled in Esme’s lap, her encouraging words sounded reasonable, something that I could do for my Bella, a self-imposed purgatory for all the rest of my days.

(Fine time to be choppin’ onions *sniff!*)

The sudden appearance of a nomad is the catalyst to Edward’s descent into unendin’ madness…madness not of his own makin’ except that he put himself into its path!

He introduced himself as Nicholas. Judging from the dirty brown hair pulled back from his face, secured in a pony tail and the disparaging state of his clothes, the lack of shoes and his overall disheveled appearance, I surmised that he was a nomad with no permanent residence and no access to human conveniences like a shower or a fresh change of clothes. His demeanor was curious, but cautious as his riveting red eyes, surveyed my family assembling on the porch in our usual “V” formation reserved for greeting new “friends”. It wasn’t often that a lone vampire could approach six of his own kind as a stranger and not feel threatened, but this newcomer appeared quite genial.

There was a shift in his gaze and from Carlisle’s perspective I could see him glance up at my room. “Why do you keep one hidden away?”

I was immediately up from the bed and hovering near the window. From this angle I could not see my family, only the visitor. He was not looking up now; he’d raised the question and was watching Carlisle’s reaction, hoping to get some insight on my absence.

“My son has been going through some difficulties lately. We number six without him. I’m sorry but your one is not a threat to us so we did not feel his presence was necessary,” Carlisle said politely.

“No I imagine it wouldn’t be.” Nicholas smirked. He glanced up at the window again. Our eyes locked.

A change of scenery might cure your ills, friend. I’m always looking for a traveling companion.

“What difficulties could a peaceful coven have to deal with?” He looked at Carlisle expectantly.

I’m sorry Edward. Please try not to listen.

“Edward, lost his mate some months ago. Please don’t take offense to his absence.” Carlisle clearly did not want to discuss me with this stranger.

“Ahhhh, yes well that is understandable. I’ve never been mated myself, but I have seen the debilitating effects on the survivor. Though recovery is also possible; I’ve seen that too. One should never lose hope.”

“No of course not.” Carlisle’s fingers slid through his hair a gesture he resorted to in times of stress.

All the more reason you should come with me young Edward. I’m sure your coven mates care deeply for you, but having the survivor near can be extremely taxing on the entire coven. A break might be a nice change for both you and your family.

I found myself in Nicholas’ head watching my family. Three perfectly matched pairs. Emmett and Rosalie looked bored. Emmett clearly had been hoping the visitor would be less than friendly; he liked a good fight and never missed the opportunity to display his brawn.

Rosalie was thinking about changing the color of her hair, perhaps adding some red highlights. Esme looked tired, my mother actually looked tired. From her thoughts I could see she was clearly relived that this vampire posed no danger to her family, but troubled that the attention had been turned to me. She was thinking how she would ask me to go hunting with her later. She would tell me she was afraid that Nicholas still lurked nearby and she didn’t wish to go alone.

Jasper remained tense. Any reminder of his past life in the south always put him on edge. He was flipping through his memories too fast for me to focus on any specific one, looking for Nicholas’ face in them. I could see his fingers around Carlisle’s elbow where I usually gripped when communicating with him. Even without the gift of seeing thoughts, he was conveying his concerns. When I saw the faraway look in Alice’s eyes I immediately jumped in her head. Her vision was blurry but I knew it was me driving somewhere in my car.

Where was I driving to?

Without givin’ away the whole story, Edward’s curiosity didn’t kill him but it sure tortured the hell out of him!

So, are you curious enough, and brave enough, to follow Edward on his incredible journey?

Stay tuned for more drive by fic recs!

Happy Saturday, y’all!

  1. Holy crow, Rita! Haven’t even read your post yet, I just wanted to say how nice it was to hear from you on the other side of the pond! I’ll no doubt have more to say (including my own recs for stuff I’ve been reading) in a bit.

  2. BR549

I was so excited when I got my notification email. Glad you’re back 🙂

  3. edwardsvamptramp69

Have I died and gone to Heaven? Is this a delusion? I was going to send out a search party for you, Rita, I’ve been missing you so much! Thank you for the rec!! I think I can put on my big girl panties and suck it up and give this a try. Welcome back!
    XOXO

Thanks, Paula darlin’ *HUGS!* Nice to be missed but I missed y’all, too! I’ll be waitin’ to hear what you think after you finish The Guard…if you make it that far LOL!

    Hi Ladies,

I’ve been reading and enjoying Zveka’s suggestion the Hopeless Series. This is the first one: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12795140/1/Hopeless-Kingdom

    Hopeless Kingdom By: Fragilelittleflame

I’m almost done with the second out of three.

Not sure if this link will work, but this is the BossLogic tweet imagining rumored Rob as the new Batman: https://twitter.com/Bosslogic/status/1092067928424484866

I love the poster he did bloody knuckles and all!

    • readicted

I haven’t gotten to those yet. Is the third one completed yet?

      • dpennell007

No. I’m on the EPOV story which is his view on the first two. By the time I get caught up on the third, it should be just about done.

    • rita01tx

Hi, Donna darlin’! Still need to get into Zveka’s recs, as well and the link to the BossLogic tweet worked! I think Rob would make a great Batman but I’m skeptical it’s something he’d do. Of course, he’s the master of surprises so anything’s possible!

“Battinson” manips are startin’ to make the rounds…here’s a good one of what he’d look like with the mask:

So excited to receive this alert Rita. I’m trying to recall if in all my thousands of fics I’ve read, if I’ve ever read one that starts with Bella’s death. I honestly don’t think I have. That would typically be a disqualifying event for me. However you have really piqued my curiosity and interest. This is definitely going on my list to read soon. Maybe it will be my next read, depending on how angsty my current read ends up being. I am reading A Litany at Dusk by duskwatcher2153. I’m only on chapter 4, but I can tell you that so far I find myself enthralled by the author’s evocative writing. This Edward is experiencing a crisis of faith of sorts. And I’ve just learned a huge surprising detail about Bella’s history. The storyline has me very intrigued. Many of you have probably already read it if your were interested, but if not, on the strength of the nearly 4 chapters I’ve read so far, I rec it! I read and enjoyed some of this author’s fics too.

Woopsy too many links. I’m in the clink.

    • dpennell007

I loved A Litany at Dusk! My Shiny Freak was out there for sure. I know I read that while you were reading it because I saw all your reviews. Buried, even though complete sounds nightmare inducing.

      • readicted

I haven’t had a chance to read at all today, but I’m eager to get back to ALAD. It’s enthralling. My Shiny Freak got a little wild at the end there, but it was a fun and hot read. I thought of you during the super bowl, begrudgingly. I know you are a Patriots fan.

        • dpennell007

Thank you! lol. I do love my Patriots. My department at work consists of 3 workers and a supervisor. She and I are fans, one of the girls has zero interest even though she grew up here, and the other is a rabid, bitter Buffalo fan from Lockport NY. I had to keep my celebrating at home…

Shiny Freak went a bit off the rails when she went on the Jesus tangent, but I think she was just seeing how far she could go.

          • readicted

Yes I agree about MSF. As for your coworker, I guess I’d be rabid and bitter too if my team was The Bills, lol. I mean The Bills! My poor NY Giants have been stinking it up for a few years now.

    • rita01tx

Holy mother of pearl! A Litany at Dusk has been on my TBR forever. So many “classics” I still haven’t gotten around to *sigh!* My Shiny Freak sounds like just what I need after The Guard! I was hesitant about Buried when it first started postin’ but it soon sucked me in…a really good murder mystery! Long as E/B make it to the end together (and they do), it’s all good for me LOL!

    • hmm I will need to read A-Litany-at-Dusk and Buried …

My Shiny Freak was funny to read 🙂

  6. bevey99

Well surprise surprise. Thought you fell into a tulip field and couldn’t get out.
    THANKS, this sounds really dark.
    XOXO

    • rita01tx

Heheheh! That woulda been a really good excuse if it were true, Bev darlin’! My Bear had some health issues that were very distractin’ for a long time. Way better now so fingers crossed we’re all back on track!

The Guard is very dark but the unique plot, as well as the depth the author goes into Edward’s mental and physical experiences, is a dream to encounter!

  7. I like your strategy Rita, shorter posts that don’t take sooo much effort. Even a single-rec post opens that forum where everyone else jumps in with their own comments and recs. Looking back at the last couple posts, I got all warm and fuzzy with all those familiar names that I feel like I know…

This was a great recommendation back in July:
“Aaah, Protector…a fic after my own heart! You’re gonna FLUV it, hon! Wish I was readin’ it for the first time *sigh!* What a great fic!”
I think that’s about the best thing you can say about a story, that you wish you could read it again for the first time!

You mentioned in the March 2018 post that I had recommended “Darker Moon” by Flaming Maple. Her stories continue to be my obsession. The ones I’ve read have all been vamp, wonderfully canon with always an intriguing twist. She’s so prolific (and quick) too! Deliciously angsty but well-earned HEAs – mostly! There’s one that kinda turned my stomach where Edward dies – like dead – and she goes back to Jacob. (Noooooo!) I would look up the title but I don’t want to even think about it. I so love it, though, when ridiculously talented new authors turn up in the fandom!

I’m sure everyone knows that SheViking has surfaced again. She posted a new chapter for My Viking in January (you could probably all hear my squealing from Oregon when the alert showed up), and an unexpected one for (previously completed) Mate in December. Mate is one of my 10 favorite vamp fics ever – so beautifully imagined and so hot and so sweet. For My Viking she’s only posting the latest chapters on FFn, since they were so rude as to pull the story earlier. So you have to go to Stars to find the older chapters – totally worth the effort.

I recently finished two terrific AH stories, which were probably mentioned in a pre-March post. First is A Servant Wife by shouldbecleaning: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12600574/1/A-Servant-Wife
The second is 1500 Acres by MeteoronaMoonlessNight
    https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12921753/1/1-500-Acres

Both, coincidentally, are about hardworking farm people, A Servant Wife a century or two back, and 1500 Acres contemporary. Both have wonderfully drawn characters, admirable Bellas, big-hearted and hot Edwards – what more do we need? Both stories do a great job of realistically imagining the challenges of daily life.

Another one I’m currently reading is “Prey for the Wicked” by Aleeab4u. It’s a WIP, on hiatus for a few years (yes years), but it came back to life with a new chapter in November! A sizzling hot Darkward. I can’t believe this was on my TBR list all this time – I love everything Aleea writes – and I’m so glad I picked it up.
    https://www.fanfiction.net/s/6785758/1/Prey-for-the-Wicked

I’m also in the process of writing reviews for Momatu’s “Stepping from Shadows”, one of the freshest vamp stories in a long time. I love it because Bella is the vampire, and Charlie is Edward’s dad. Her human Edward is soooo lovable, and her Bella is one of my favorites (actually, I picture her as Demelza from Poldark). Momatu does a fabulous job of imagining the Cullens’ deep histories, and she echoes back to events and people from their previous stay on the Olympic Peninsula. The only hiccup is she divided her story into two fics, so even though this one is complete, the story isn’t, and she hasn’t begun posting the sequel. That kind of irritated me, although to be fair, the range of her story is roughly equivalent to Twilight. (Reviewing this one is extra fun because she responds to reviews!)
    https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12629066/1/Stepping-from-Shadows

I’m also speeding through a classic AH story, “The Harder They Fall” by Ironic Twist. A hugely long story but it has totally kept my interest so far. Bella has an English degree that doesn’t exactly burn up the job market, so she’s working for a cleaning company that has a contract at – you guessed it – the megacorp where Edward is CEO. I love seeing the action unfold from both their points of view, their self-talk is delightful. I’m shaking my head wondering how I missed this one all this time (finished in 2012).
    https://www.fanfiction.net/s/5257177/1/The_Harder_they_Fall

OK, Rita, I know you’ll have to fish me out of too-many-links jail – sorry about that. But these are all so GOOD!

Rereading your July post, I got all jazzed to read Set in Stone by Psyche001, and in the meantime she has pulled it. Can you hook me up with a copy, pretty please?

In one of last year’s posts Readicted recommended Bethesda Gray’s “How Do I Live?”. She described it so much better than I could, so I’ll just say “Amen”!

Whew, I guess that’s it – sorry to overwhelm you. But hey, I had m-o-n-t-h-s of fic chatter backed up.

    • dpennell007

Prey for the Wicked and The Harder They Fall were both FABULOUS! So many good stories out there.

      • dpennell007

I haven’t read THAT The Harder They Fall. lol. I read the companion stories by LadyExcalibur2010 about military Edward meeting widow Bella with four rambunctious sons.

        • rita01tx

If anyone has missed readin’ The Bigger They Are by LadyExcalibur2010, don’t wait! As Renee mentioned about The Protector, this is another fic I wish I was readin’ for the first time! (The Harder They Fall are outtakes from that story and won’t make sense if you haven’t read The Bigger They Are)

Donna, lol thank you. I had myself all confused as to why I have two fics titled The Bigger They Are by two different authors, and those same authors both have a follow up or companion fic titled (of course) The Harder They Fall. So Ironictwist and LadyExcalibur2010 are two different authors…right?

    • rita01tx

      You’ve got mail, Renee darlin’!

    • 1-500-Acres and Stepping-from-Shadows are excellent stores, didn’t read two others as they are wip
I was burned before with longtime no updates wip so now I’m waiting to see them finish ( but I will put them on alert)

    • rita01tx

Succinctly put, Renee darlin’! It’s like you read my mind LOL!
It warms my heart to know you’re still enjoyin’ some of my past posts and it happens occasionally that I come across a story banner on Pinterest that leads to one (or more) of my favorites where I gleefully wallow among the comments and laugh out loud at the joy you all seem to have discoverin’ and sharin’ old and new fics!
Brings tears to my eyes, it do *sniff!* (dang onions again)
I’ll do my best to keep the momentum goin’ but y’all feel free to come kick my butt when I don’t…PLEASE!!!

    • rita01tx

Remember when shouldbecleaning tiptoed into our world with A Swallow to a Dove about 5 years ago? To date, she has 16 fics on her profile and A Servant Wife is probably my favorite, so far!

Meteoronamoonlessnight is another author who snuck up on us in 2016, grabbed us by the throat and ain’t let go since! 20 fics and countin’! I do love a prolific writer…except when I can’t keep up LOL! But I did read 1500 Acres and enjoyed it more than I thought I would! The age difference, with Edward bein’ so much younger had me scratchin’ my head…didn’t look like it would work but it sure as hell did!

I, too, was excited to see the update for Prey for the Wicked! In fact, quite a few fics picked back up after a long hiatus, My Viking bein’ one of them, AND Jayliwood has created a new profile and is busy repostin’ all her pulled fics as Jeskawood…she hopes to have them all up by the end of the year but it’s a great opportunity for us to leave her love for all the fics we enjoyed as pdfs while they were pulled!

It is a seriously great story if you ever find yourself lookin’ for something completely different!

MarrieCarro’s Origins stories are awesome! I’m readin’ Origins: Destiny in the Mountains and can’t wait to get to Origins: A Lost Soul!

Hmm, I have this on my list. I think zveka rec’d it. Sounds like it might be a perfect chaser for The Guard.

You’ll love this Edward and it’s a perfect chaser for The Guard! I do like your word “chaser” for a fic that will cleanse our palette of angsty goodness LOL!
