Empty cup in hand, my bare feet felt the dead hay that had flattened in the night, and I cursed my brain as it switched automatically from peacefulness to combat mode, senses high and on alert. It’s my job to follow screamed my old sense. It’s not your job anymore cried my new one. I went down that lane anyway as I heard the repeated sounds of movement and something that I was relieved sounded like an animal, but I stopped short when I heard murmurs of. . . something else.
I inched forward, accompanied only by the listing sound of my own movement until my heart jumped in my throat as the next sound met my ears.
Was that a human voice?
I paused before continuing, my soft gait changing and beginning its learned shuffle, ignoring the prick of the sharp ends of dead grass that cut my feet. They stayed close to the ground on instinct, instead of stepping because that’s what you do. You never know what or who you might be stepping on. The shuffling sound also served as a warning to give whatever demon that lay in wait in front of me the chance to leave. My head snapped up a moment later in the direction of a sound on my right, and I left the path, my body slicing through the tall grass.
The sound came again from out in front of me, something or someone caught there in the shoulder-high grasses. I pushed apart the wall in front of me with one hand but saw nothing, so I went further in, the sound of the weeds swishing closed behind me, trapping me in and revealing what I’d instinctively felt needed to be found.
A circle had formed, the flattened grass much like the path that I followed to get here, but an area I couldn’t see from the porch. And in that circle, was a girl.
She was curled there, in a white sort of dress that didn’t match the era we were in. Her hair was in chaos, tangled on the trampled hay, and there was a smudge of dirt on her cheek. She lay completely still, and my first thought was that I hoped she wasn’t dead, but I knew something had made the sounds. I studied her a moment to see if I could detect any sort of life, and then something moved, but it wasn’t her. I squinted and craned my neck to figure out what it was, what my mind was trying to show me, and then I saw.
Nestled in her arms was a brown fawn, its tiny, shivering body snuggled up against her. I stared at it as it stared at me, and suddenly the thing turned, concentrating on the girl who was whispering to it, smiling at it. And fuck me if that animal wasn’t smiling back at her. Then the unnatural mother holding this animal turned, and her hair shifted, forming a halo around her with little white flowers and green bits of foliage caught in its web. It was a sight so natural in its unnaturalness, so worthy of existing, I nearly choked.
I felt dizzy, nauseous at the fact that for the first time in months, I wished for the camera that I’d amputated from my life because I knew that this would’ve been the one picture I’d hang on that goddamned wall.
It would have captured life, not death.
As if one fantastic collaboration wasn’t enough, Tufano79 and Heartfortwilight have teamed up to provide a story rife with drama, angst and romance!

Other fire stations and crews were on scene and as soon as the engine stopped, Edward was out the door and picked up his ax. He went over to the chief in charge and listened to the game plan for fighting the fire. After telling different crews to handle different parts of the fire, he turned to Edward and the team from Station 17. “Station 17, we need to you to go to the top two floors and look for anyone who may be trapped there. We don’t have a lot of time men, so get in and get out as soon as possible,” the chief said.
Edward looked at Marcus. “Let’s get in there.”
Putting on their self-contained breathing apparatus, which only holds thirty minutes of air, they walked up the steps and through the doors. Stepping into the thick black smoke, they went to the stairs and headed up. They would go to the fifth floor and work their way down.
Edward placed his hand on the door before opening it and even though it was warm, it was not hot, which indicated that a fire was on the other side, but not enough to cause a backdraft. Pushing open the door, Edward and Marcus walked into the hallway.
“You take the left and I will take the right. Keep in contact,” Edward commanded.
Edward and Marcus made quick, but safe checks of the apartment, yelling out that they were firemen and to scream if they trapped. It was hard to hear anything over the roar of the fire, but that didn’t stop them from trying. Edward had reached the end of the hall, he tested the door and busted it in. The room was engulfed in flames, lapping up the walls to the ceiling, dancing in a glowing, deadly dance.
“Fire department! Call out! I’m here to help you,” Edward yelled.
Listening carefully, he heard a faint cry coming from the back corner of the building. He took off towards the sound and when he got there, the doorway was fully engulfed in fire. Looking into the room, he saw a young woman standing by the window, trying to pull it open.
“Miss, don’t do that,” Edward yelled, but it was too late.
The woman got the window open, which allowed the wind and oxygenated air to rush into the room, causing the fire to become an inferno. The wind blew around the room and the fire blasted around the room towards her, pushing her out the window by its force.
Edward barged through the fire, not even thinking about himself, only the woman who needed his help and ran to the window, catching her hand before she fell. “I’ve got you,” he yelled.
“Don’t let me die, please,” she cried hysterically, scrambling and trying to pull herself up.
“I am not letting you go, but you need to give me your other hand.”
The young woman tried to reach up with her other arm, but she didn’t have the strength to do so. Suddenly, there was a violent explosion on the floor below causing the building to shake. Edward lost his firm grip on her hand and was only hanging on by her fingers.
No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t regain the strong hold he had before, but she began to slip, inch by inch. “Please! Please!” she screamed.
Edward looked into the tear-filled eyes of the young woman, his grip failed and she began to fall through the smoke and fire.

Knowing something terrible about the future but being unable to warn anyone about what’s going to happen without risking your own existence is the dilemma facing Edward Cullen, but he decides to take that risk because for once in his life he cares. There’s a stealthy build-up to an exciting climax for our Twilight characters and the story is rated M for all the usual reasons.

He’d come out here to think and hopefully make sense of the disturbing information he’d learned several hours ago. He’d got over the initial shock and had almost come to terms with it, but now he had to decide what to do about what he’d learned, which if true, would be life-changing.
He had no reason to doubt the person who had inadvertently disclosed what she had obviously been trying to keep from him, but what to do with that knowledge was what was tearing him apart. How could he carry on with his day-to-day life and function like a normal person knowing what he now knew? How could he tell anyone else what he knew without disclosing a part of his life that he kept private?
Most importantly though, if he told anyone, who in their right mind would believe him?
He placed his head in his hands and squeezed his temples as if he was trying to erase from his brain what he had learned, but he realized that he would never be able to forget, or even ignore what he now knew. The only decision he had to make was to either do something or do nothing, and if it was something, what to do and how to do it, and also whether taking that proactive decision would have an irreversible impact on his own life. He laughed to himself then as whether or not he did anything at all, his life was going to change whichever road he took.
He’d spent most of his life trying not to stand out, doing everything he could not to be noticed; in other words he had successfully avoided becoming ‘someone’. He was supremely talented at his craft but he had never sought fame; he just wanted to live a mediocre and anonymous life in the shadows. He was happier with his life now than he had been at any other period, but already he had accepted that whatever decision he made, he would have to re-think his future sooner rather than later and that knowledge depressed him greatly because for once he had a purpose; something to live for; something that made him happy.
He sighed as he reached over to the ignition switch and flipped it up. Instantly the boat’s motor sprang to life and filled the air with a deafening roar, which after the peace and tranquility of the previous hours sounded harsh and abrasive to his ears. His long, slim fingers gripped the smooth, polished steering wheel which was icy to the touch, but he ignored the pain as his mind was still fixed on his unresolved problem.
As the boat picked up speed, he had to turn sharply to avoid hitting a buoy that he hadn’t spotted until he was almost on top of it as its warning light had been smashed. As he passed it on his left, he noticed that it had been vandalised by someone who obviously didn’t like a local politician, as a derogatory message had been painted onto the floats. His boat made an impressive spray as it swerved out of the way and he spun around the buoy several times to make note of its serial number so he could report it to the authorities, but also for a bit of fun as he enjoyed performing ‘donuts’, especially if he had passengers he wanted to impress.
As the beautiful white and silver craft bounced across Elliott Bay heading towards land, the bitter morning air stung his face and ruffled his already unkempt hair. But he wasn’t concentrating on the journey as the first seeds of an idea were starting to gather momentum in his head. As the outline expanded and became in his mind achievable, he began to feel tentatively hopeful that for the first time since he’d run from her to the jetty he may have found an answer to his dilemma.
If what he was contemplating were possible, it would need careful planning and preparation and he would need to be stealthy and secretive, but it could possibly be the only chance he had to do something, and he had come to the conclusion that whatever the consequences for himself, he had to do something.

The mansion was dark, and, for the first time in weeks, Esme was left alone. She had planned for this moment for what felt like eternity, stashing away money, fake ids, birth certificates, and clothes. She would be changing both her and Edward’s expensive clothes for something simpler and comfortable. Before grabbing the handle of the suitcase, she took off her wedding rings, and laid them on the dresser. Looking at the huge diamond ring, she couldn’t remember one second that she enjoyed wearing it. She would no longer be under Carlisle Cullen’s control, and she would not allow her son to grow up to be part of this life. She had lost how many times Carlisle had come home, dripping in someone’s blood. She had learned after several beatings to never question what had happened or where he had been. She was supposed to be the perfect Don’s wife at all times. Slipping out the side door, she got behind the wheel of the car and drove away with a silent prayer that this would be the beginning of a bright, safe future for her and Edward.
She cautiously drove towards the outskirts of Chicago where she had stashed a clean car. If there was anything she learned from the evil Carlisle Cullen was how to buy something under the radar. She had been witness to many illegal dealings, drugs, guns, prostitution, just to name a few. Carlisle’s guy who cooked his books, Bobby “B”, had, on several occasions, talked about how they would purchase a clean car to do a job. She had also learned where to get fake ids and other fake documents, which she had done for herself and Edward. Purchasing a new wardrobe of clothes and new toys for Edward, had also been done and placed in the waiting car. As of today, they were no longer Esme and Edward Cullen, but Maria and Tony Masen.
Pulling up beside the car, she surveyed the area for anything out of the ordinary. When she felt everything was safe, she got out, and got Edward from his car seat.
“Are you ready for a trip, my love?”
Edward giggled and blew spit bubbles, his large sparkling green eyes so full of expression.
Even though Esme was scared about what the future, she knew that she needed to get Edward far away from Carlisle. Carlisle had already started planning when he was going to begin Edward’s training. Esme didn’t say anything, but she heard some of the vile, ruthless, and disturbing things that they would have Edward do to groom him into a cutthroat future Don. She knew then that she had to take Edward and disappear.
Even a die-hard angst h00r like me needs lighter fare to break the cycle and high school Edward and Bella do that for me. Lover of the Light is a fic I’ve actually enjoyed twice so I thought it was time to share it with you!https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11245905/1/Lover-Of-The-Light

She turns it up, and music about knowing the truth about friendship helps calm my nerves as she drops down on the bed beside me.
I take a hit. I lift the bowl and look to her as the smoke hits the back of my throat.
Bella’s eyes are low, and she looks like she’s a little too drunk to think clearly. The eyeliner under her left eye is a little smeared, but she still looks pretty with the shadows on her face. Her strawberry red, brown hair is a little frizzy, but it still looks soft and smells like vanilla and lavender. It’s not even a cheap vanilla, it’s sweeter but not so pungent. Like French Vanilla.
She doesn’t need to get high, but that’s why we came here. At least, that’s why she wants to be here. I just don’t want to say goodbye yet.
I pass the bong to her, and she has to tuck her hair behind her ears before she places her lips over the mouthpiece. I light the bowl for her, and wait until she fills the chamber before lifting the metal from the glass piece.
She blows smoke between her lips slowly and soundless, and I find myself licking my own as I watch her.
“How old are you?” I mentally palm my face once I realize what I’ve said.
She looks up at me, smirking. “Um … Sixteen. Why? You going to tell me that you’re really thirty?”
I clear my throat, averting my gaze to stare down at my red and black plaid ruffled sheets. “No, I’m sixteen. I was just curious.”
She looks around the room again and lays back to rest on her elbows, biting her lip as she scans her eyes over the shelf above our heads. “Do you like baseball?”
I shake my head, leaning back on my elbows to rest beside her.
“My dad played. I like to watch sometimes, but I can’t play.”
She tilts her head back. “Can’t?”
I nod, not really in the mood to elaborate. Everything is a little hazy, and I keep looking at her lips and her cheeks and forgetting what I mean to talk about.
I notice a lot about Bella that I didn’t before.
She has three freckles in a row speckled along her left cheek that I didn’t see before but can’t stop looking at now in the cheap yellow lamp lighting in my room.
Not only is she the first girl I’ve ever invited in my room, but she’s also the first girl to sit on my bed and it’s all I keep thinking about.
I’m not an amateur.
I’ve kissed girls, and then I’ve done things…other things with them. Sex and girls don’t make me nervous. She does.
I don’t want to use Bella.
I mean, I do. But I don’t want to give her back.
I want to kiss Bella. I want to do so much to her. But tonight isn’t nearly enough, and I’m afraid that if I get to kiss her now I might not get to do it again.
Maybe it’s because I’m an idiot, or maybe it’s because I’m drunk. Maybe it’s because I’m high and I’m typical teenage-boy-minded. Maybe it’s because Brightside’s lips are too close to think, but it seems worth risking when I catch her looking at my lips too.
I close my eyes and whisper, “Fuck it.”
My last rec is also a high school E/B fic with one helluva twist! I’ve read this one at least three time and can’t believe I’ve never brought it to your attention before…rectifyin’ that situation right now!https://www.fanfiction.net/s/4623382/1/Legacy

This long ass excerpt is because Edward’s relationship with Charlie cracks me the fuck up. See if you can keep a straight face!
Bella found a note on the kitchen table from Charlie. He was out fishing with a friend over in La Push and would be home in time for dinner. I helped Bella with some laundry and cleaning even though she told me to sit down and relax. Bella had a load of her clothes in the washer down in the basement and we ended up on the couch in a heated lip lock with our limbs intertwined. I heard Charlie’s cruiser pull into the driveway, and we scrambled to straighten our clothing and at least appear that we weren’t doing something we shouldn’t have been doing even though we were. When Charlie walked in through the front door, Bella was sitting ridiculously close to me (with one of her legs thrown over my lap!) for two people who were trying to appear innocent but had knocked their halos off when they were running their hands through each other’s hair in a mad make out frenzy.
Actually, I probably lost my halo down in the basement when I playfully grabbed and rubbed Bella’s ass when she was bending over into the washer. Oopsie.
Charlie looked at us suspiciously and I tried to change positions, but Bella wouldn’t budge. “How you two doin’?” he asked casually.
“We’re good, Charlie,” Bella responded, still slightly out of breath.
“Still a Cullen,” I said seriously and unsarcastically as I could. Damn it, we must have rolled over onto the remote and changed the channel at some point because there was an infomercial on. I moved slightly, and the channel changed again. Shit, my ass just changed the channel! Charlie’s eyes shifted between the television and where we were on the couch.
“What’s wrong with the TV?” he asked and then started up the fucking eyebrow dance.
“I don’t know, maybe it’s going on the fritz,” Bella said, not knowing that my talented ass had managed to change the channel. In order to not raise any more suspicion, I tried not to move, which, of course, made my body nervously twitch on its own more than it ever had. The screen went from the infomercial, MTV, TLC, TBS, Hallmark (ooh, M*A*S*H*!), NBCNews (hey, was that me?), Home Shopping Network to a scrambled channel that sounded like PlayBoy within thirty seconds.
Charlie walked over to the TV and turned it off after a distorted image of a breast appeared. Two seconds after he pressed the button to turn it off, my ass turned it back on. “What the hell!” he exclaimed in confusion. While his back was turned I quickly got up, flipped the couch cushion up, grabbed the remote, and threw it in Bella’s direction as she started laughing hysterically. I fixed the couch cushion and sat back down in a flash before Charlie turned around to see what Bella was laughing about.
“Sorry, Charlie, I must have been sitting on the remote by accident,” she explained through her fits of laughter.
“Oh, okay,” he sighed. “I’m glad we don’t need to get a new TV.”
“No, we don’t need a new TV.” Using the remote, Bella turned the television on and off. “And my big butt didn’t break the remote.”
“Your butt isn’t big!” I said.
Charlie’s head whipped around to me, and his eyebrows did the equivalent of the Samba. “Don’t be looking at her butt!”
“He’s my boyfriend and he can look at my butt all he wants, right Edward?”
“Oh, don’t drag me into this!”
“Don’t be looking at her butt!” Charlie repeated.
“Hell, he can touch my butt!” Bella said with a raised voice. Dear God, was she trying to get me killed?
Charlie pointed an accusing finger at me. “Don’t be touching her butt!”
“I’m not!” I said innocently, even though I had touched Bella’s wonderful, curvaceous backside on numerous occasions.
For some reason, I had raised both of my hands in the air in an odd attempt to prove my innocence. Like that was going to do me any good.
“Oh, yes you have!” Bella said and then clamped her hand over her mouth.
Shit, I was dead! What would my obituary read? I could see it now Anthony Edward Cullen (nee Masen), 17, was killed by her girlfriend’s father after she admitted that he had touched her ass in the presence of her father, the town’s police chief, Charlie Swan. Swan is free on bail after pleading guilty in a temporary insanity plea.
It was easy to see that when Bella got into an argument, she acted before she thought. The timer in the kitchen went off and interrupted our exchange. “What’s that for, Bella?” Charlie asked.
“The dryer should be done,” she explained. “I did a few loads of laundry.”
“Go down to the basement and fold your laundry down there,” Charlie said. “Edward and I need to have a talk.”
Charlie was sending Bella away so she didn’t have to witness my murder. She was scarred enough. My life flashed quickly before my eyes. Fuck, the majority of it was a snooze-fest!
“Oh, I don’t know if that’s such a great idea,” I said nervously. “I’d like to live.”
“Bella, go down to the basement,” Charlie instructed. “Edward—kitchen.”
Bella stomped her foot and headed toward the door near the kitchen that led down to the basement. Charlie turned toward me and nodded in the direction of the kitchen. “It’s been lovely knowing you, Bella!” I said while walking to my doom.
Opening the door to the basement steps, Bella yelled at us. “Charlie, don’t be too much of an ass, please!”
When we reached the threshold of the kitchen, Charlie sat down at the table and instructed me to do the same. “What are you intentions toward my daughter?”
Wait… what? I wasn’t expecting that. “Huh?”
“I am trying to look out for Bella’s best interests, even if she doesn’t appreciate it,” he explained. “I don’t want to see Bella heartbroken by some stupid teenage boy who follows his hormones, talks her into something, and then brags to the entire school about it.”
“We’re not having sex, if that’s what you think.”
“Where did she sleep last night at your house?”
It took me a minute to realize that he meant the Cullen house, which was, um, yeah, by extension, my house. “Do you any guns here in the house?”
“Shot gun in my bedroom upstairs,” he replied quickly.
“I’ll give you a warning and a two minute head start,” he said with an uneven smile. What a generous offer; however, I was without a car or a cell phone to call for help. I could make a beeline for the trees and hide in the thick woods. It was my only chance for survival.
“Bella slept in my bed, with me.” I cleared my throat. “I told you, we’re not having sex,” I quickly added.
“Depends on your definition of fooling around,” I said and immediately regretted it. “There was kissing, some minor groping, and yes, damn it, my hands have been on Bella’s butt. It’s nice, but for some reason she thinks her butt and her thighs are too big, which is insane.” I was rambling because I was nervous and told Charlie more than he needed to know about our extra-curricular activities. It was easy to imagine him jumping up from the table at any moment and running upstairs to get his shotgun. I needed to change the subject, STAT! “Look, Charlie, Bella told me what happened when she was five.”
If Charlie’s eyebrows were doing the Samba before, they were doing the Mambo now. “She did?”
“She told me about Renee and Phil and that you basically rescued her from that situation. I think it’s real big of you to have raised a daughter that isn’t biologically yours because you cared enough to want her to be in a safe environment.
When she told me what happened, I wanted to knock their lights out. I know she’s Bella’s mother, but what the hell kind of woman is Renee that she didn’t believe her?” Charlie’s expression had softened during my speech. I took that as a good sign. A very good sign.
“She’s not who I thought I fell in love with all those years ago.”
“Ain’t that a bitch.”
“Certainly is, Edward.” Charlie smirked. “I don’t want to see Bella hurt.”
“I get that, really I do. We had a talk and I told her that if I did something that made her feel uncomfortable that she needed to tell me. She shouldn’t keep it bottled up and hide it from me.”
“That’s admirable of you.”
“She shouldn’t have to deal with it on her own.”
Charlie gazed out the window for a few seconds before turning his attention back to me. “How many girlfriends have you had before Bella?”
“None,” I said honestly. “We were never in one place long enough for me to make friends.”
“So, why Bella?”
“Actually, she pursued me at first and I tried to, um, decline her advances,” I said. “I got to know her as a friend. Bella’s a great girl, she’s smart and beautiful. I like that I can actually have an intelligent conversation with her. She’s not an empty headed girl.” Skepticism was written all over his face. “I’m not one of those guys that are out to hurt a girl on purpose, and I don’t want to hurt Bella. And whatever we might or might not end up doing… you know, in that sense, will be because she wants to and not because I pushed her into something, ya know?”
“You’re too damn honest for your own good,” Charlie said, shaking his head.
I was unsure if he actually liked or disliked my honesty. “Um, thank you?”
“I want Bella to be happy, even if a sarcastic, smart mouthed boy is the one that does it for her.”
“Aw, shucks, Charlie.” I smiled at him. “Now can we be best buds?”
“Don’t press it, kid,” he said. “Remember, I own a shot, gun that’s right upstairs, and I’m older and can easily forget that I gave you a two minute warning.”
“Oh, you wouldn’t do that to Bella! You wouldn’t do that to your best bud!”
Cue the eyebrow dance of the Salsa. “So now you’re suddenly a wheelchair-bound Native American?”
“Billy is my best friend,” Charlie explained. “You… you are someone I have to put up with because of Bella.”
“I’ll make you love me, but not in the biblical sense.”
“That’s good, because I prefer the female persuasion,” he said.
“Speaking of females, you’re way too uptight, Charlie! What’s going on with you and Sue? Maybe you need to get horizontal between the sheets, ease up on some of that tension from work and stuff.”
“Bella!” He yelled toward the stairs. Maybe I had been too much of a smart ass with Charlie. “Get up here before I do kill him!”
I heard Bella running up the stairs and into the kitchen. “Oh, thank God, there’s no blood.”
“Not even a scratch,” I smiled happily.
“Say goodnight, Edward.” Charlie said. “I think it’s time for you to go home now.”
Until next time…whenever that might be!
Happy Wednesday, y’all!
