This intense FireFighterward story is marked Romance/Drama, but, IMHO, it starts out with some heart-stopping angst. The title of the first chapter, “When It Rains,” is the first clue of what is to come, and most definitely represents, literally and physically, that it does indeed pour tragedy for this Bella right from the start…

Chapter One: When It Rains

Bella Swan trudged through the torrential rain with a scowl on her face. Not only had she just spent her entire day off being ridiculed by her family, but she had also just been informed that her landlord was hiking up the building’s rent. Again.

She splashed through the puddles on the sidewalk as she turned onto the next street. Her purse jingled loudly with loose change, stray pills, and discarded pieces of jewelry from the course of the previous week. Bella apprehensively reached into the chaos and dug around for her cell phone, anxious to check the time. She had a date with the supermarket and didn’t want it to close before she could purchase her weekly stash of ramen and frozen vegetables.

Just ahead, a white car took a sharp corner and its headlights flashed across the dark street. It was entirely empty, save for the lone girl stopped just beneath the streetlight. The driver swerved uncontrollably, blinded by booze and ignorance. Bella only had a chance to glance up before fate showed her losing hand. She opened her mouth to scream, but emitted only silence in the last split second before the car made its impact.

But, do not fear, dear readers, as Bella has a fabulous rescue crew, including firefighter Lieutenant Edward Cullen, who are all bound and determined to save this brave but seriously injured woman…

“Car wreck, girl pinned, expect casualties!” Edward called out as the crew loaded into the truck. He sat shotgun, peering anxiously out into the wet, foggy night. The sirens wailed and screeched through the vacant streets, alerting half the city to the catastrophe at hand.

Tyler plowed through the stoplights and traffic jams as they neared the chaos of downtown. Nightlife was in full swing, with drunken bimbos and juiceheads wandering the streets. Edward’s knees jerked in anticipation to bail out. He hated these calls. There were always fatalities and he didn’t relish the thought of pulling bodies from the wreckage.

They pulled up on the scene moments later. A small crowd had gathered around a lone streetlight, surrounding a smoking vehicle. The police were already on scene, and ambulance 51 was just behind their truck.

“Everybody, back up!” The officer in charge was shouting as his men attempted to round up the spectators.

“What do we got, Jasper?” Edward called, jogging up to the wreck.

“Drunk driver; looks like he hit a pedestrian.” The cop grimaced and nodded back toward the light pole. “She’s pinned, and the driver is out cold.”

Edward finally took in the scene, and had to bite back the acid in the back of his throat. The front of the white impala was basically wrapped around the pole. The driver was slumped against the steering wheel, entirely unconscious. Another car had slammed into its driver’s side, effectively t-boning the trashed vehicle. Its driver had already been pulled out. Pinned to the damp, wooden pole was a young woman, no older than twenty-six. She was laid out over the hood, mahogany hair spilling out in waves. From where he stood, Edward could see her back heaving with heavy, ragged breaths.

“Jasper, direct the medics to the driver first. We’re going to have a hell of a time getting her out and we need to assess the situation first! Emmett, grab the jaws! We’re going to have to cut them both out! Tyler, Mike, see what you can do about the second car. The driver and the girl are pinned until we get it moved!” Edward raced around the back of the second car to check on the girl.

Her brown eyes were wide open and brimming with terror. Edward leaned over the side of the vehicle to look into them and was instantly stunned. Porcelain skin, wide, dark eyes, and full pink lips. He would have been mesmerized if it weren’t for the blood pouring from the nasty gash on her forehead.

“Miss, can you hear me?” He rested his gloved hand on her own trembling one.

She nodded frantically, the left half of her face pressed to the hood of the car.

“Alright, we’re doing everything we can right now to get you out.” Edward assured her…

And they – firemen: Edward, Emmett, Jasper, Tyler, Mike, Jake, and paramedic, Alice – certainly do everything in their power to rescue Bella! Even in her grave time of plight, though, while struggling for her life, Bella still made me smile with her wit, jokes and strong will to live. It’s a powerful start to a riveting and consuming story. I will warn you, and give you a little SPOILER…it’s not an easy story to begin reading; I’ll admit I shed some tears, prayed hard for Bella to survive, cringed a bit, and, there is no doubt that Bella does have a long and winding road to recovery, with some complicated bumps in that road.

While Ties That Bind evokes strong emotions in the reader surrounding all the tragic drama, it is also a beautiful representation that one can overcome anything with the help, support and love of the right people, and that ties are definitely bound forever and always through such a profound event. I’d be remiss if I didn’t also mention that Bella has an amazing family support system behind her, in her parents, Charlie and Renee, and older brother, Seth. As well, this is an Edward and Bella romance fic, so, while Bella has some recovery hurdles to overcome, she may just have a certain, sweet, caring firefighter close by her side to help and encourage her…every ‘step’ of the way.

Light My Fire by reyes139

Light My Fire ~ So, as we stood with our group of ten on this sweltering day, I would have never guessed that through these few…one would stand out and be responsible for my meeting with a certain brunette that would drastically change the course of my once lonely and sad existence. ExB Rated M Drabble fic!

Rated: Fiction M – English – Romance – Edward & Bella – Chapters: 225 – Words: 58,653 – Reviews: 10,082 – Favs: 779 – Follows: 1,003 – Updated: 03-08-13 – Published: 07-03-12 – Status: Complete – id: 8283797

Reyes139 is a fic author I thoroughly enjoy reading, one of the first I read quite some time ago and keep coming back to time and time again. She’s owned me with many of her captivating stories: Until I saw you and It Isn’t Over Yet – to name a few, and now Light My Fire has just been added to that list. This FireFighterward story is a true depiction of that name, with Lieutenant Edward Masen, one of his partners, Riley – another trainer and veteran with the Aventura Fire Department in Miami, Florida, and their recruits, as they show us their lives as brave and heroic firemen. And, there is even more to this romantic story as we look at the apt title for this hot and sultry drabble tale, because Bella’s “green eyed firefighter” will definitely light your fire…everywhere, just like he did for her in chapter 28…

Edward stood in front of the group and began to show them the correct way to wear what looked to be breathing apparatuses and oxygen tanks on their backs. Everyone followed his every movement and as he dismissed them and told them to ‘suit up’… they did.

Full uniforms went on…fireman’s pants, suspenders, jackets…boots.

Once the gear was on, they began with their other equipment, all cadets donning the same and awaiting for their instructors to give the next set of assignments.

The entire thing was hot to watch, but my eyes were still solely trained on my Lieutenant, his yellow pants with the suspenders down and his blue A. F.D. shirt.

Fucking delicious.

*Some HOT Firemen to Light My Fire!*

*Some HOT Firemen to light our fires, ladies!*

What a visual…*licks lips* But Bella isn’t the only one hot and bothered, and in chapter 24, our ole Lieutenant Masen tells us that Studentella does exactly the same thing for his hose, I mean, him…

Her tiny, yet curvy body now molded to my over six foot frame.

Soft, supple, and extremely succulent was how she felt.

I became a goner…forgetting the prick now glaring at me and the way my hands only seemed to tighten around her waist.

I wanted to growl at him like a feral dog protecting his bone… staking claim on what only my lips should bite, lick and suck on.

This little girl was lighting my once doused fire and making me want to burn in her depths.

*phew* So very hot! But what also drew me into this story, besides the fiery connection between Edward and Bella, was the eclectic medley of Twilight characters, as Massy likes to “mix things up.” Therefore, not only do we have a sexy, lovable, 36-year-old daddy in Lieutenant Edward Masen, and an intelligent, confident, 20-year-old, college student Bella, but many more of the Twi gang in some way, shape or form… Emmett, Edward’s new firefighter recruit, is Bella’s cousin and they are extremely close, as their parents are the owners of Swan Financial Corp. Bella and Em are a year apart in age and have grown up playing, going to school, and always supporting each other. Cullen, another fireman recruit, is not another Edward, but in fact a younger Carlisle at 22 years old…and boy does this jock keep it interesting with his annoying, cocky attitude. Then we have Edward’s ex-wife, Leah, and holy shit is she a nasty woman, but, because “Bella is not mousy and will not let anyone get in the way of her happiness,” Leah doesn’t really become too much of a problem for E & B’s slow growing, smokin’ hot relationship.

Light My Fire is a smooth and enjoyable read and complete at 225 drabble chapters; providing us with a slow burn full of UST and hot firefighters, electrifying sparks between Edward and Bella, fun and laughter, and eventually a HEA. Enjoy!

Worth the Weight ~ After what was supposed to be a routine heath check, Bella finds herself at a crossroads. Change her habits or face the consequences. Her decisions lead her to meet Edward, a nice guys who just wanted to help her. But when he wants more, will Bella be her own worst enemy? HEA as always. CC Rated M for a reason. All human.

Rated: Fiction M – English – Romance/Friendship – Bella & Edward – Chapters: 12 – Words: 43,711 – Reviews: 899 – Favs: 535 – Follows: 900  – Updated: 08-04-13 – Published: 04-21-13 – id: 9224307

While today’s post is focused on FireFighterwards, and mathisson has given us this enjoyable, inspiring story that does indeed have a swoonworthy, sweet and shy fireman Edward, it isn’t really focused on that; it’s more of a well-rounded story that I think many women will relate to… It’s about two step-sisters, Bella and Rose, who not only share a special friendship created when their parents married – Bella’s father and Rose’s mother – but also bond over their shared struggle with their weight.

These ladies live in Port Angeles, Bella works in the evidence room for the PA Police Department, where her father is the Sheriff, and Rose works in the garage as the head mechanic.  After a visit to the doctor’s for a check-up, as she was suffering from headaches and fatigue, Bella learns some unsettling news…

Excerpt from chapter 1 BPOV:

He lowered his arms and smiled at me as he spoke. “Fine….Your blood work shows me that your cholesterol is up and your urine is positive for sugar….Your blood pressure today is quite elevated and I don’t have to tell you that your weight is at an obese level.”

I didn’t respond only because I was now scared. Why would there be sugar in my urine?

“Now the elevation in your blood pressure would certainly explain the headaches and the sugar in your urine tells me that we need to test you for possible diabetes.”

I could feel my heart taking up residence in my throat, diabetes? That would mean shots and needles and we don’t get along. At all.

“Bella, I can order every test in the world and tell you that you are killing yourself by keeping this weight on. But that will do nothing to fix the problem if you aren’t willing to do your part.”

I lowered my head and began to shake it back and forth. …

So as I made my way out of his office with the information he had given me swirling around in my head, I nearly missed the bright pink flyer that was sitting under my wiper blade of my car.

Real time fitness

Under new management

For a limit time, new patrons receive 90 days free and consult with a personal trainer.

This is where Bella decides it’s time to better her health and thereby her life. So, along with Rose, they take a new leaf in their life, and join Jasper’s gym. It’s there that Bella’s life not only changes health and fitness-wise, but romantically as well, when she meets a certain, sweet, sexy firefighter, who, unbeknownst to Bella, also co-owns the gym… *grins*

Excerpt from chapter 3 BPOV:

I walked over to one of the free machines and noticed that the long pin that told you how much weight you were lifting was set at over two hundred.

I tried to pull it out, but it wouldn’t budge. I looked around and noticed all of the staff was still busy. I tried again but to no avail. Just when I was about to completely give up on this machine, a velvet voice rang out from my left.

“I always find it sticks for me too, you just have to know the trick.”

I turned to the voice as I felt warm fingers covering mine that were still attached to the pin.

It was Mr. Green Eyes himself. His amazing eyes were like beacons in the night. His eyelashes were so thick; it made his eyes stand out even more, if that was possible. His eyebrows thick but shaped very well. There was a dusting of freckles across his nose and cheek. For lack of better words, he was beautiful.

The gasp that came out of my throat was involuntary and embarrassing. I tried with all of my might to look away from his face, but it was useless.

“I’m sorry; you must think I am some creepy guy who uses bad pickup lines to get girls to notice him.”

Just as I had no control of the gasp, I had even less control of the laugh that burst forward. His smile was huge as he laughed along with me.

Finally removing his warm hand from mine, he looked me straight in the eyes and said, “Pleasure to meet you, I’m Edward Cullen.”

Aw, and the rest, as they say, is… Well, you’ll just have to read the existing twelve chapters to see what a lovely Romance/Friendship story this is for Edward and Bella, and how he supports and cares for her. I think he was definitely worth her…wait. *wink* I will leave you with a small insight into how this Sweetward did come to be a firefighter… *sigh*

Excerpt from chapter 8 EPOV:

I thought for just a moment before I admitted the single thing no one knew about me.

“When I applied to college, my father wanted me to be a doctor like him. I did as well, to a point. I wanted to help people and make a difference in their lives. I was visiting a friend of the family in New York and I watched a fireman save a little girl from a burning building. I watched as he just ran right into the building that had smoke pouring out of it, and a few minutes later he was climbing down a ladder with the limp girl hung over his shoulder. It was the most amazing thing I have ever seen.”

The Possibility of You by afragilelittlehuman

The Possibility of You ~ Lieutenant Edward Cullen is a dedicated fireman, but, when a new probie joins his crew, he struggles to keep things professional. Will he be able to keep himself in check or lose his heart to the possibility of love? AU/AH. M for language and lemon.

The Possibility of You won two awards – Steamiest Smut and Judges Choice – in The Perv Pack’s An Officer and a Gentleman Contest in 2010, and this cute story definitely earned its winnings, as not only do we have an upstanding Seattle fireman in Lieutenant Edward Cullen, but also in Bella: his new probie firefighter. Their flame of chemistry instantly erupts when Bella joins his firehouse, and our hot Edward seems to struggle with his attraction to the beautiful new firefighter, and his visions of her…sliding down his…pole…

I fell in lust with her the minute I saw her tight little ass slide down that pole.

Damn, that sounds bad. Let me back up.

When Bella walked into the firehouse for her first shift as a probie, we were all welcoming and professional. As a lieutenant, I made sure my men treated her with respect and as an equal…well, as a regular probie. It wasn’t like I had to work too hard at it. My guys are the best fire company in Seattle, and they took her in like any other new firefighter. Except for one small difference.

They were obsessed with seeing her slide down the station’s pole.

I don’t think it was “they” who were obsessed, dear Lieutenant, lol, but there are so many “possibilities” for Edward and Bella in this steamy, little gem of a story. So go ahead and read to discover them all as Bella learns the firefighter ropes!

Forged Through Fire ~ “A bond forged by fire is never broken” – Ladder 49. When the siren sounds, the fire fighter leaves to put his life on the line for total strangers – No questions asked. But why does this particular fire fill Edward with a sense of dread? OOC,AH,Fireward

Forged Through Fire was also an entry in the The Perv Pack’s An Officer and a Gentleman Contest, and in this dramatic and exciting little FireFighterward story, Edward truly is a real hero…

…the siren sounded.

“Saved by the bell,” I said, dropping my cue on the table and moving toward my turnouts.

Emmett was on my heels as we reached our lockers and I quickly threw on my pants and pulled my suspenders over my shirt.

I grabbed my helmet and jacket and ran for the truck.

“Where we headed?” I asked Jasper, who was our driver and already fully dressed.

“Voltaire Street in Forks. That new apartment complex that went up recently near the school,” he said, as I continued to do up my jacket.

“Shit, that’s only about a half mile drive from my place,” I said.

I prayed that none of my close friends were in that complex tonight…

Ten minutes later, we pulled up out the front of the building.

I jumped out and ran to throw on the rest of my gear as I surveyed the building.

The fire was about three quarters of the way up; god, I hoped the people on the upper floors were out…

Looking around, I noticed there were people everywhere and most of them were in a state of hysteria.

The paramedics had already arrived, treating many people for smoke inhalation.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw my dad standing next to one of the ambulances. He must have received a call from the hospital and come down to help.

The captain called us over to him.

Fortunately, the landlord had thought to grab a list of tenants and had done a head count for us.

I let out breath of relief, as it seemed that all tenants were out safely.

“Rose, Bella!”

I turned around to see a man climbing out of a police cruiser and running toward the building.

As I ran to him, I recognized him as Chief Swan.

“Chief Swan, you can’t go in there,” I said to him, as I grabbed him by the arms.

“Don’t tell me what to do, son. My girls could be in there!”

Wait, his girls?

“Your girls?” I asked him, clearly confused.

“Yes. My two daughters moved here last week. Rosie, Bella!” he cried out again.

As Edward takes in this upsetting information and forges through the building, housing this dangerous and life-altering fire, guess what his one goal is and who he may rescue? *wink* ‘A bond forged by fire is never broken’ – Ladder 49.

Butterscotch And Butterflies by Dobber17

Butterscotch And Butterflies ~ Written for “When Love was New” Contest. Bella works at an ice cream parlour and lives a life that constantly leaves her in problematic situations. Edward Masen, fireman and regular customer at Bella’s work, seems like the perfect candidate to help out. ExB

Rated: Fiction T – English – Romance – Edward & Bella – Words: 7,884 – Reviews: 113 – Favs: 278 – Follows: 61 – Published: 11-06-09 – Status: Complete – id: 5494040

This romantic one shot was written for the 2009 When Love Was New Contest, and while is it rated T, and we don’t have any graphic lemons, it certainly isn’t lacking in any way… We have a lovely, gentle fireman Edward and a shy, hardworking, college student, Bella, who just happens to be dubbed “Ice Cream Girl” by Edward and his firefighter friends. Why? Well, they frequent the ice cream shop where Bella works, to wind down after a tough, hot and dirty day on the job…

I admit I shamelessly stared at him, watching as he ate his standard double scoop of butterscotch ice cream in a cup instead of a cone. He had removed his coat, draping it across the back of his chair, leaving him in the standard navy blue t-shirt that easily allowed me to see the muscles of his arms peeking out. He still had his fire engine red suspenders hitched securely on his shoulders and his bright yellow pants on display underneath the table.

I looked away to tend to a customer. The instant my eyes involuntarily darted over to where I knew he was, boring brown met glimmering green. Our eyes had met numerous times before; the result always being him immediately ducking his head. This time was different. This time he held my gaze, smiling around the spoon in his mouth. One of the men in matching uniform that sat next to him gave him a shoulder bump and whispered something in his ear.

Once again, I was forced to tear my gaze away from his, this time to take the order of a family of five. Just as I rang up their orders, the group of heroes entered my field of vision. They made their way out of the ice cream parlor, giving me cheerful smiles and polite nods. Except for one. He stood a few inches taller than the rest and had trademark dimples. Black curls sprung from his head in every direction.

“Bye, Ice Cream Girl,” he hollered with a wave.

“Bye, McCarty.” I had no idea what his first name was. The only reason why I knew his last name was because of all the times his chief scolded him for flirting with me when he ordered. It was harmless, and I secretly enjoyed the amusement it added to my days.

The bronze haired, butterscotch lover gave him a gentle shove towards the door, turning to look at me one final time. He nodded towards their usual table and gave me a crooked smile.

I grabbed the table cleaner and a rag from under the counter. I made my way over to the previously occupied table where a piece of folded paper caught my eye. I slowly unfolded the paper, my eyes widening as I read what was written. Scribbled in black ink was, “Call me 911.”

I bit my lip, trying to hide the smile that quickly formed on my lips. Yes, I realized that this number would do me no good seeing as it was the emergency number but I wasn’t that naïve – I was able to read between the lines.

So can we, Bella…so can we! *grins* And now that you know where the “Butterscotch” comes from in the title, and its importance, I bet you can guess who the “butterscotch lover” is. *winks* But the best part is that once you read more, you will then come to learn the sweet story of how the “Butterflies” part of the title is intricately woven into this endearing story, as well. I thought it was absolutely beautiful and romantic. *sigh*

Sing For Me Sweet ~ “I wanted his hands on me, on every part of my body. I wanted to feel him pressed up against me, his skin touching mine. I wanted our passionate kisses to escalate until I was panting, trembling, on the precipice until I was begging for more.” AH AU

Firefighters are my favourite kind of hero. They are superheroes in my eyes. I interviewed a volunteer fireman once, and I never quite got over my crush. When MC asked me to read a story for this post, I was all:

And let me tell you, Sing For Me Sweet was a sweet, sweet read.

The thing I loved most about this story was how very canon all the characters were. Do you like your Bella self-sufficient, tough, protective and compassionate? Your Edward moody, arrogant, tortured and incredibly respectful and loving? How about Carlisle – fantastic doctor, gorgeous, a gentleman wholly in love with his wife and the epitome of a caring father? The siblings are all exactly as Stephenie Meyer described, but human and playing different roles. That is a rare find in my eyes, and well worth reading a story for. Combine canon characterization with Edward as a heroic rich-kid-turned-firefighter and Bella as a super efficient, knowledgeable and caring nurse/singer, and you have a truly engaging story.

There’s a lot of fun, plenty of angst, some lemony goodness, laughter and tears. I thought everyone would enjoy this excerpt from chapter 7:

“So, what does this guy look like anyway, Bella?” Angela asked. “He must be pretty hot, huh?”

Rose and Alice groaned.

“You haven’t heard this story?” Rose asked her, incredulous.

“Who hasn’t,” Alice commented. Angela giggled as I groaned. Both Rose and Alice prepared themselves for their Bella-imitations, and if it wasn’t so damn funny, I might have been slightly offended by their characterization of me. Rosalie poufed out her hair while Alice wore a doe-like expression on her face, pulling her bottom lip between her teeth. Totally not accurate…bitches.

“He sat down the bar from me, totally checking me out,” Rose chimed, her squeaky voice sounding nothing like mine. I better not sound like that…

“He looked so hot in his tight jeans, drinking his manly beer all while sending out sexy-time vibes towards me like heat waves,” Alice chimed in, swinging her hips with a snap at the end.

“And his bronzed sex-hair and heavenly green eyes just made my girlie parts tingle,” Rose finished, clasping her hands together under her chin and batting her eyes in rapid succession.

“I just wanted to jump his bones right then,” Alice jumped in, her hand going to her chest in a mock fainting motion. “But his dick just looked so large in his tight jeans, it frightened me. So I just ran right outta there, heading back to my land of virginity and chastity.” Rosalie and Angela were bent over in hysterics at her words. I was a half annoyed, half amused. That sucker did look huge…and I wasn’t that chaste, even though it’d been awhile…

“I spent the next two weeks, pining after my lost love,” Alice began again.

“And touching myself while he came to me in my dreams,” Rose added on the side. I swatted her arm playfully. “Don’t even act like you didn’t, Ms. Swan. Our walls aren’t that thick.”

“Oh my gosh,” I moaned, covering my eyes to hide my embarrassment.

Guess who’s listening in to their snarky repartee? I’m not telling, you’ll have to read it yourself. 😉

There are moments close to the beginning of this story – and even some way in – I found frustrating and annoying. Somehow by the time I reached the epilogue, I had tears on my cheeks. There are snippets of genius here that are worth your patience to find. Emily Bowden is an author to watch in my opinion. Her greatest gift is in how well she learns as she writes. Emily demonstrates the observation of an artist, and I hope she gives us plenty more opportunities to see and experience the world through her eyes.

Map To The Stars

As Rob films Map to the Stars, a film engaging in  a “complex look at Hollywood and what it reveals about Western culture,” we revel in the fact that nothing reveals more about Western culture than its depiction in Twilight fanfiction. It takes those Western elements and values of political, artistic, philosophic, literary, and legal themes and traditions, that have been in the forefront of that complicated Hollywood society for many years, and brings forth a whole new and deep dimension of that fascinating, and sometimes hidden world.

This is an under-reviewed story written completely in EPOV and features a young Actorward and Actressella just starting out and acting in their first big movie. The movie is the author’s version of Twilight (different name, of course) and Edward and Bella are representative of the actors in the original movie. They first meet on the set when Bella comes in to audition for her role. Edward’s inner monologue is pretty humorous and I found myself laughing in several chapters. It’s not all fluff and humor, though. There is also some drama with our favorite couple in this story and some minor obstacles they need to overcome, but it’s pretty angst-free and is HEA. All in all, it was a pretty good story and one I wouldn’t mind reading again when I need something more lighthearted.

Let’s take a look at this humorous excerpt, showcasing Edward’s inner monologue, from Edward and Bella’s first meeting (Bella’s audition):

“Edward, darling! So nice to see you handsome!” I was wrapped in a hug before I could respond.

“Hey Tanya.”

At first glance you’d think Tanya wanted to fuck me. But that was just Tanya. It was her European way, you know.

Kiss. Kiss. Hug. Hug.

All that fucking shit.

I didn’t mind it. She was one of the hottest casting directors I’d seen.

What? She’s hot. I’m a guy with a dick, sue me.

“Are you ready to get started darling? We have five girls to audition with this morning and I would like to narrow it down by lunch.”

“Sure, Tanya. Let’s get started.”

The first girl made her way into the room and came into the bedroom set.

Ugh, no. Just…nah. She was okay looking I guess. I mean…I’d pop a chub if she was naked but she wasn’t anything extraordinary.

“Hi Edward, I’m Lauren.” Oh god. Nasal voice. Bye potential boner, I’ll miss you.

“Let’s get started!” Tanya clapped her hands together and ordered quiet on the set. The camera rolled and I got into character.

“Claire…stay very still, I just want to try…one thing.”

I leaned in to kiss her and she propelled forward to close the distance between us.

Ugh. Oh god, no.

Dry. Chapped. Lips.

Wait, do I taste…Cheetos? What the fuck?

I pulled back and stopped the kiss. There was no way I was sticking my tongue in there. I gave Tanya a small nod.

No way.

“Okay, thank you Lauren we’ll let you know.”

I loved how Tanya could dismiss someone in one sentence.

Lauren winked at me before she left.

Blahgg. Vomit.

“I’ll be right back.” I excused myself and practically ran to the bathroom. I grabbed my set bag and silently thanked my sister. She was a bitch but a bitch who could anticipate my needs. Which right now, was a toothbrush, andddd minty toothpaste. Yes! Hygiene is fun guys.

After brushing my teeth for what seemed like an hour I made my way back onto set.

“Next!” Tanya yelled and the door opened to bring out the next girl.

This went on for the next two hours. I’d have to kiss an unappealing overeager girl and then brush my teeth for twenty minutes.

By the time the last girl was on her way in, I wanted to kill myself. I couldn’t suffer through another terrible makeout session. My gums were getting sore from the insistent brushing. They’d start bleeding soon.

I heard the door open and looked up from my spot on the bed.

Holy. Motherfucking. Shit.

I…uh…holy motherfucking shit!

The girl…no the woman…who just opened that fucking door. Oh my god.

I was frozen. I don’t even think I was breathing.

Okay not breathing. Just making zombie noises? Alright then.

I don’t know what the fuck that was. Shut your mouth.

Ow. Boner. Painful fucking boner. Glad to see you came back buddy.

Okay. Settle down. Close your eyes. Breathe.

Oh holy shit! Now she’s right in front of me.

Pale skin.

Brown chocolate eyes.

Mmmm Hershey kisses.

Oh god kisses. I wanna kiss those lips.

Nom nom nom.

Pouty pink perfect lips. I bet they taste like chocolate.

This was the most gorgeous face I’d ever seen.

Oh, lips are moving. Huh. I don’t hear anything.

“I’m sorry could you repeat that?”

Pay the fuck attention Cullen! Boner go away, not now boy! Down!

Please don’t have a nasal voice.

Please don’t have a nasal voice.

Pretty fucking please.

“I said hi, I’m Isabella Swan. You can call me Bella.”

Mmmmm. Boner I totally understand. I wouldn’t be able to go away either.

Just don’t poke her, buddy.

Classic Actorward

Faking It by Spangly9

Faking It ~ Half of Hollywood’s most famous couples are faking it. That’s how Bella Swan’s publicist convinces her to pretend to date troubled Hollywood bad boy Edward Cullen. And she’ll do anything for her band and her music.

Rated: Fiction M – English – Bella & Edward – Chapters: 32 – Words: 144,679 – Reviews: 5,562 – Favs: 8,598 – Follows: 2,909 – Updated: 10-30-09 – Published: 06-20-09 – Status: Complete – id: 5153711

There is no doubt that Spangly9’s epic Faking It is one of the best Actorwards ever written, but more than that, it has something else that is a rarity amongst Actorwards and that is believability.

When we meet Bella, she and her band, Eclipse, have just bit the big time after winning “America’s Next Great Band”.  But even with their newfound fame, they are still newcomers to the whole “celebrity” thing and her swanky publicist, Aro, talks her into a fake relationship with the gorgeous, troubled, but infinitely talented Edward Cullen.  In short, Bella’s band needs his Hollywood royalty status and he needs her innocence and “girl-next-door” sweetness.

Edward seems like a dick at first, and yes, he probably is a bit – but there is a lot more to this bad boy than meets the eye.  He is supremely talented, and when we get our first glimpse of him, his talent is being wasted due to the fact that no-one wants to employ him – this makes him a little bitter, but he knows deep down that it is all his own doing.  It takes a while for Edward to let Bella in, but when he does – wow… he does it in style!

This extract is a tiny bit spoilerish, but I can’t resist you seeing Edward in full “swoony” mode…

From chapter 17 (Edward and Alice chatting about Bella..)

“I like her, too, Alice.” I said softly, “I think I love her.”

Her eyes abruptly brimmed with tears and she smiled. Then she flung her tiny body across the couch at me and threw her arms around my neck.

“Oh, Edward. That’s great! I knew you weren’t completely hopeless!”

Then before I could respond in any way, she was scrambling off the couch and over to the door.

“Wait till you see her tomorrow!” Alice said, now fully re-engaged as the Stylist Nazi. “She’s going to take your breath away!”

And she was out of my room in a flash. I laid my head back on the pillow and spoke to the ceiling. “She already does.”

All together now…  Awww!

Sunshine moment aside, just as it seems these two are going along beautifully, disaster hits (in other words, Edward being a drunken idiot hits!).  And believe me when I say, when the angst arrives in this story, it goes all the way to 11.  But never fear, lovely readers, this story has a wonderful ending and I can say with my hand on my heart that, in my personal opinion, this story is the best completed Actorward out there (and that is saying a lot, seeing as it is one of my favourite genres!!). If you are one of few who hasn’t read this classic, start it today, I am sure you won’t regret it!

We Were Meant to be Scene ~ One shot entry for the Public Lovin’ Contest Bella has a fantasy of sex in public and wants Edward to act it out with her – literally – opening night of their play.

Rated: Fiction M – English – Romance – Edward & Bella – Words: 4,702 – Reviews: 97 – Favs: 143 – Follows: 70 – Published: 10-12-12 – Status: Complete – id: 8604763

Vancouver-Canuck-Girl is seriously remiss in failing to warn of possible instantaneous combustion while reading this fic – this story is hotter than Hades.

Bella and Edward are actors preparing for the opening night of a stage play.  Naturally, by the story’s end, Edward has me wrapped around his little finger…although, I’d rather be wrapped around something else *wink* but it’s Bella who won my immediate admiration.  Why?  She is my kind of girl – she knows what, and in this case, also who she wants, and goes for it.  Here she is, the shy understudy, bravely sharing with the director, Carlisle, her opinion of how the love scene should play out, while co-star Edward listens more than attentively…

“I think these two need to get a little wild and crazy.”

“Okay, tell me what you’re thinking then.” The director laced his fingers together and leaned forward on the table while he waited to hear her idea.

She licked her lips before she spoke, and when she did, her eyes were steadfast on me.

“I can totally see Evan grabbing Becky, pushing her roughly against the wall. Instead of agreeing to make love, he says he wants to fuck her.”

My mouth dropped open. I certainly liked where this was going.

“I think he grabs her leg, hikes it over his hip before he nips playfully at her collarbone.” Bella smiled as she gave her suggestions, her eyes locked on mine.

Two could play at this game.

“Maybe they fuck right there against the wall, without taking their clothes off. Evan’s jeans hang precariously off his ass. Becky’s panties tugged down, her skirt hiked up so he can bang her right there.”

In case that left you in any doubt, Edward was more than willing for his character Evan “to get a little wild and crazy.”  We Were Meant To Be  Scene is both erotic and sensual; real life and acting reflect each other as life imitates art in the best of ways.  It may be a one-shot, but, believe me, it’s packed full of little things that show the creativity of Vancouver -Canuck-Girl’s mind, and, fevered chemistry I’d love to witness on the silver screen.  Go on; take five minutes to read this provocative nibble of naughtiness.

Mise-en-Place ~ I recreated his mother’s recipes when he was homesick. I made meal plans when he had to gain or lose weight for a role. And when he wanted chocolate-covered strawberries and champagne for another woman he was bringing home, I made them with all the love in my heart—the love he’d never see. So I showed him with my food.

“An aperitif (the word comes from the Latin aperire, “to open”) is a light, most often dry, most often modestly alcoholic beverage meant to spark the appetite without overwhelming the senses. … As for Campari itself, the drink is believed to contain rhubarb and ginseng, but I don’t know for sure. What I do know is that Campari is very bitter, so bitter it’s truly an acquired taste. But adding soda helps a great deal in the acquiring; in fact, a fair amount of chilled soda can open up Campari nicely, turning it into a more nuanced drink.” Jim Nelson. “Spirits: The Art of the Aperitif.” Food & Wine Magazine.

1.5 oz Campari

1.5 oz sweet vermouth

1.5 oz gin

Orange slice or twist for garnish

Pour into an old-fashioned glass over ice. Stir well. Garnish and serve.

Mise-en-Place is complete at 14 chapters, everyone of which opens with a culinary definition and/or a recipe, that will come in to use later, but don’t think you are reading the wrong story; Edward is indeed an Actorward, and I have to be honest here, at the beginning, he also fits in the Dickward category.  The long-suffering and very lovely Bella is a chef, and she has the dubious pleasure of quite literally catering to Edward’s whims.  At times like these he is lucky her knives are not to hand…

“You’re fired, Bella.”

“You’re fired,” he said, sitting behind his desk. His voice was hard, but he looked tired. He couldn’t look me in the eye. “Pack your shit and go.”

“Why, Edward? What—”

“Tanya said you cooked her dinner last night with butter.”

“No! I didn’t, I swear! I haven’t even bought any butter since she went on that stupid fucking diet! Edward—Mr. Cullen, please!”

“I’m sorry.”

I couldn’t help but scoff. I stared at my employer for a beat, but he was resolutely examining his own hand, spread out wide over the fine grain of his oak desk. The first time I realized I was in love with Edward Cullen, he had averted his eyes then, too. He’d been behaving like a gentleman then, not a coward.

“I thought I meant more to you than that.” Before he could answer, and before the tears in my eyes could make good on their threat to fall, I turned and left. I ran down the hall from his office, down the stairs and through the foyer to the huge kitchen that had been my truest home for the past three years.

“Three goddamn years!” I cried out, heading straight to the liquor cabinet. I reached in and grabbed the first thing I touched: Campari.

“Hah, fucking perfect.” I didn’t have the time or inclination to mix up a cocktail, or even add soda water to fucking allow those herbal flavors to open up or anything else. I didn’t even particularly want to use any glassware, but I had some fucking class. Unlike some cheap-dye-job strawberry-blonde silicone-enhanced on-a-fucking-diet starlets I could mention. Whore.

I poured a healthy measure into a lowball glass, sloshing some over the rim. Slamming the bottle down on the counter, I knocked the glass back. I grimaced; Campari was potent in a cocktail—on its own, it was nearly intolerably bitter.

My face reflected, indistinct, in the glossy marble countertop. Even in the poor, stone mirror my melancholy was evident. I wanted to keep drinking, but I wanted out of there even more.

“Asshole will probably make me pay for it, too, if he sees,” I muttered.

You know what they say about the way to a man’s heart…after three years of being secretly in love with Edward while cooking and baking for him– and his…err…female companions – even preparing the whole clichéd aphrodisiac spread when he was trying to impress a new conquest – she must wonder who made up that load of baloney.  Eventually though, with delicious enticing food as the backdrop, the relationship changes, and Edward allows Bella, and thankfully us, to taste the hot, sweet, goodness under his crispy shell.

Go read Mise-en-Place if you want to find out if Bella receives the service of a lifetime, and if Edward finally savours more than Bella’s culinary delights!

Director’s Cut ~ It was actress Bella’s first love scene and she was nervous. Director Edward tries to encourage her. However, when the scene starts, can Edward keep himself together? Remain professional? And after, keep himself in control? Collab with kyla713

Rated: Fiction M – English – Drama – Edward & Bella – Words: 10,128 – Reviews: 116 – Favs: 460 – Follows: 146 – Published: 09-02-11 – Status: Complete – id: 7347027

This one-shot opens on the last day of filming on a forty-five day shoot with the director Edward, along with the crew, quite on edge as they prepare for the final scene.  Not only is it the most difficult to film, it’s also the most pivotal scene in the entire movie – a fight/love/fight scene between low-life, creepy, goose bump inducing James, and Bella, “…young and an American sweetheart that blushed and was honest-to-God humble.”  To add to the tension, this is her first ever love scene, and so Edward heads to her trailer to check on her…

Taking a deep breath, I entered the trailer and found Isabella curled up on the couch with her copy of the script in her hand.

Her dark eyes looked up, giving me a wary smile. “Hi.”

“You okay?” I asked as I walked toward her. She cocked an eyebrow and I knew she going to try playing it off.

“I’m fine, Mr. Cullen,” she replied with a tiny shrug. “I’m just trying to get into character.”

“Need any help?” As I asked, my eyes roamed over her—she looked exquisite. Her hair, which normally would be in a ponytail, fell loose over her shoulders in a mass of dark curls. She wore a long, white button-down shirt, something her character would wear to bed. However, the discomfort of being so exposed was clear in Isabella’s features, no doubt wishing she could instead be dressed in her usual attire on set—a comfortable pair of jeans and a hoodie. Her bare feet were tucked beneath her, pressing her long legs firmly together, but even when she tried to tug the shirt down more, it still left little to the imagination.

Isabella tossed the script aside and let her head fall back as she exhaled harshly. “I’m not really worried about the sex scene as much as slapping the man.” Internally, I grinned. Of course she’d be worried about hurting someone. “The sex is pretend, but that slap will be real. Not to mention that I have to cuss.”

Could she be any sweeter?

I laughed. “That’s what you’re worried about?” When she nodded and her narrowed gaze bore into my own, I knew she was serious. “Okay, sit up.” I sat beside her and cocked an eyebrow. “Repeat after me.” Her lips thinned as did her gaze, but she squared her shoulders, tipped up her chin, ready to comply. “Shit. Fuck. Hell. Asshole. Bitch. Dick. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.”

A corner of her bottom lip slipped between her teeth, and I noticed that her breathing had changed. I took a deep breath to compose myself, because the situation seemed to have taken a wrong turn. I had come in here to calm her, and instead, she appeared even more nervous.

“Repeat that again, please?” she asked softly, watching me closely. And as I repeated, I realized that she was watching my mouth. I closed my eyes, knowing I had to leave immediately before I did something that would further delay the shoot.

I cleared my throat, since she had gone completely silent. “Shit. F-fuck. Hell. Asshole. B-Bitch. Dick. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.”

Leave now, Cullen! No wonder she’d gone mute when I said the words. Her mouth looked edible as her teeth scraped over her bottom lip when she said “fuck.”

I swallowed and stood up immediately. “See, Isabella,” I said, clearing my throat again. It had suddenly gone dry. “You’ll do fine.”

She smirked as if she knew what was wrong with me when I turned to leave. Before I did, however, I pressed a kiss to her forehead. And it served its purpose. She sighed softly and as I left, I could see that she visibly relaxed. Too bad it had the opposite effect on me.

Oooh, evidently there is good off-screen chemistry between these two – without the need for acting skills.  One of the things I like most about this fic is how the sweet, Oscar winning Bella, handles the talentless, arrogant James.  Best of all though, has to be Edward’s reaction to watching the push-pull, and the passion play out before his eyes; is he envisaging his own private trailer scene? *snicker*

Just Life the Movies by DeltaSwan90

Just Like the Movies ~ Edward is a famous actor who isn’t satisfied with his life. He and his good friend Alice are off to film the newest superhero flick. After a fight with his boss, he ends up meeting someone who may just change the way he feels about his life. AU/AH ExB

Twilight – Rated: M – English – Friendship/Romance – Chapters: 13 – Words: 45,299 – Reviews: 480 – Updated: 2-8-09 – Published: 1-6-09 – Edward & Bella – Complete

Edward, Hollywood’s golden boy, became friends with Alice in their early days as struggling unknowns, and, in an act of kindness, so she wouldn’t be alone, he took her home to his family one Thanksgiving.  It was love at first sight for her and Edward’s younger brother Jasper, and, it was as Edward so eloquently put it “…just like a fucking movie.”

Although, to the observer, Edward is leading the perfect life, he admits to himself:

I have steady work and a hefty paycheck. My family is caring and involved with my life. I have a good friend in Alice. And I have a girlfriend.

I have every reason in the world to be happy.

But, I’m not.”

No, Edward is not happy: he seems somewhat disillusioned and cynical with the world in general, and Hollywood life in particular, as he accepts that for the majority of people, including himself, life is not like the movies…very few people get their happily ever after.  Then he sees and hears the sweet, down-to-earth Bella; he is impressed by her kindness and an awareness of hope that it sparks within him.  He returns to the same place – a small, quiet restaurant – the same time the following week; his excuse being he found the place peaceful, but really, he hopes to bump into Bella – which he quite literally does…

“Are you alright?” I asked her.

“Yes, I’m sorry,” she apologized again. “I wasn’t watching where I was going. Are you alright?” She looked up at me, and I met her gaze for the very first time. Her eyes were lovely, a warm, deep shade of chocolate brown. But what was most interesting to me was that she wasn’t wearing any make up. I didn’t know a single woman who didn’t wear make -up in public. What actually arrested my attention was that she didn’t need any make-up. She was heart-breakingly beautiful. Her face was pale and heart shaped; her lips were full. She looked… just a little sad. Luckily, I remembered myself and the fact that she had asked me a question.

Interestingly, each one of the 13 chapters is named with a movie title that is representative of the chapter content and moves the story and friendship forward, with the requisite evil ex, shallow girlfriend, good friends, and even ‘that’s what she said’ jokes, until at last, Edward discovers love and romance just like the movies. I stand by the review I left for the final chapter back in 2011. Yep, a cheesy ending – just like in the movies, brilliant!

The Counsellor by Michaelmas54

The Counsellor ~ Edward is a successful Hollywood actor, but is on the edge of a breakdown. His personal & professional life have been controlled by people who think of him as a commodity & when he loses the girl he loves because of this he walks away from his responsibilities, but finds help in the nick of time in an unusual place from a strange woman. Michaelmas54 is a new-to-me author who posted this lovely-and complete-fic over a very short period. The first chapter really caught my imagination and I felt myself hurting so badly for Edward; a rich, successful actor in his prime, and yet his life is not his own. His decisions, both professional and personal, are out of his control.

Chapter One thrusts us right into the drama that is his life when we watch him run, literally for his sanity and life, just as he’s due to face a room full of journalists. His anguish is palpable. Thankfully, the person he quite literally, bumps into, is the perfect person at the crucial moment – offering him a safe haven before he completely falls apart.

“The woman took her car keys from his hand and then looked up at his face as if to say something but instead she looked intently into the eyes of the stunningly handsome young man before her and gasped, but it was not the gasp of recognition he was used to, it was a gasp of concern and pity.

Her right hand moved up and touched his shoulder and then she raised it further up to his face, delicately touching the dark shadows under a pair of red-rimmed but still beautiful grey eyes. “I am fine” she said in a soft whisper, “but I would guess you’re the one here who is hurting the most?”

He was transfixed as he allowed her to touch him. The gentle caress of her hand on his cheek and the caring tone in her voice triggered something inside of him, something he had not felt since the last time he saw his grandmother. He looked down into this strange woman’s eyes and said in a voice breaking with emotion “I do need help – I need to get away from here” and then he bent his head onto her shoulder and started to sob.

Michaelmas54 takes us on the journey of Edward’s life since he became famous to his breaking point when he puts his trust in a stranger. A stranger who cares more about him than those paid to do so…and gently helps him to unravel the mess surrounding him.

So, who is The Counsellor? Not who you think! But she does help him find his way back to himself, and a way to regain both his life and his love. He’s a beautiful, broken Actorward, it’s impossible not to will him to heal.

All the President’s Men ~ He’s the most powerful man in the world, with nothing beyond his reach or influence. But is it enough to bring her back? Only time will tell. Presidentward. AH, Rated M

Twilight, English, Drama & Romance, chapters: 26, words: 53k+, favs: 1k+, follows: 2k+, updated: 7/22/13 published: 7/4/12, Edward Bella

All the President’s Men

Are you sitting comfortably? Because I have a story for you! One that contains a powerful man – the most powerful in the world, one filled with mystery and intrigue and one that has held me in its literary clutches since I read the first chapter, and still interests me twenty-six chapters later. So, let’s start with an insight from chapter one of All the President’s Men to draw you in, too…

Edward was pulled from his happy memories and troublesome musings by the sound of his Chief Secret Service Agent Emmett McCarty calling out to him as he approached.

“Mr. President,” Emmett spoke, his voice deep and serious. Edward sighed, closing his eyes for a moment before turning to face the large man behind him. Emmett stood at nearly six-foot-five, a wall of muscle and strength. With dark brown hair and unflinching gray eyes, he was easily the most intimidating man working for Edward. Of course, those who really knew him knew that Emmett could be as sweet as cotton candy, but only when off duty and with those he trusted.

“Mr. McCarty,” Edward replied, narrowing his eyes slightly due to the bright sun shining directly behind the large man. “How can I help you?”

“Sir, there is a situation that needs your immediate attention,” Emmett informed him, stepping to the side so the President wouldn’t be forced to squint.

“Is it Beth?” Edward asked with concern. When Emmett shook his head negatively, Edward sighed. “Well then, Emmett, I’m sure whatever it is can wait another,” Edward paused, glancing down to the shiny, silver Tag Heuer watch on his wrist, “fifteen minutes.”

“Mr. President, sir, it’s imperative that you see to this as soon as possible.”

“I understand, Emmett, but right now, I need to take Jake back inside and then get washed up to go back to my meeting with the Secretary of State. If I can get to it after our meeting is finished, I will. I suggest you let Jasper know what it is that’s so pressing, and he’ll make time for it in my schedule.”

With that, Edward turned around and called for Jake, the large black dog bounding over with his toy in his mouth. After retrieving the ball, Edward moved to make his way back to the White House, Emmett falling in step beside him.

“Mr. President, I mean no disrespect, sir, but you asked my team and me to let you know if we ever found any information about the Feather situation. Sir, we’ve found something,” Emmett gravely informed him, watching the President for his reaction.

Edward stopped short, his whole body freezing. He turned his eyes to Emmett, intently searching for a hint of possible deception.

“What?” Edward asked, his voice low and calm, belying the rising nerves and anxiety he felt with those words. “What have you found?”

“We believe we’ve found her, sir.”

Edward couldn’t move, his heart thundering wildly in his chest as he stared out over the grounds. He didn’t register Jake impatiently waiting at his side. He was finding it difficult to process what Emmett was telling him.

His entire world had shifted with one statement; one simple sentence and everything was different.

“You found her?” Edward asked, disbelieving and fearful. He’d been burned before, and though it was difficult to do, he tried to push away the swelling hope surging in his chest until he could be sure. He looked at Emmett, who nodded solemnly.

“Let’s go,” Edward sharply replied, “Show me what you’ve found.”

The two men walked briskly across the lawn, Jake tagging along behind as best he could with their clipped pace.

Edward hurried forward, desperate to see if who his team found was who he’d prayed it to be.

The other half of his heart. The missing piece of his soul.

His Bella.

His beloved wife, who’d been missing for nearly four years.

Yes, you read it right. The President’s wife disappeared. Missing. Presumed dead for years, by many people, but not by Edward. The most powerful man in the world does his job, gets on with his life, raises his daughter, Beth – but he does it all without his wife…and that casts a huge shadow over everything. He never gives up, never stops believing and carries his sadness with him.

Shahula has carved a totally believable mystery around Bella. Why was she taken – where did she go – and can she reclaim her life? The biggest part of the story for me is their abiding love, despite all the obstacles. But I’ve got to admit, the mystery is very intriguing!

I don’t want to reveal too much of the story. It completes this week – so as I write I’m still trying to figure out just how this will all end – and if Mr President will get his HEA – as we post on Friday, Shahula will also be completing All the President’s Men and we will have our answers! Hoorah! I’m so excited to see it all come together.

Diary of an Ugly Girl by Anton M

Diary of an Ugly Girl ~ Follow Bella as she grows from a bullied little girl into a sassy young woman. After all, it’s not about what you’re looking at, it’s about what you see. An unorthodox story about best friends and their journey. Humor/Angst/Friendship/Romance. HEA. AH

Twilight – Rated: M – English – Friendship/Romance – Chapters: 18 – Words: 183,602 – Reviews: 506 – Updated: 7-19-13 – Published: 11-11-10 – Bella & Edward

Diary of an Ugly Girl

Hmmmmm…a diary. I’m not keen on diaries. But, by jove, I love this one.

Our heroine, and by that, I mean Bella-obviously-is an extra-ordinary, ordinary girl. She is kind of plain. Don’t get your hopes up, or rely on it being like more predictable stories, she’s not pretending or deluding herself. She’s not a good-looking girl, and she knows it. In fact, she’s been bullied because of it. But, do you know what? She’s taken that, made a decision to be herself and has focussed on the things she’s good at.

She is a strong and beautiful character. Resilient, humorous, lacking filter, she really is a one-off. Her self-deprecation makes me smile, but also saddens me. She represents every girl who isn’t the most popular, maybe a bit quirky or simply different. She’s easy to relate to and I adore her.

Her diary is filled with warnings to her brother, Emmett, to stop reading – or read on at his peril. Tracking through her school year, it becomes clear that she is a loyal, giving and intelligent young woman, growing up and discovering exactly what she’s capable of…and despite offering friendship without expectations to new boy, Edward, it’s beyond obvious that he soon sees how much more she has to offer. Even if she can’t see it in herself yet.

It wasn’t that I didn’t like Edward, because I did. He’s a likable guy like that. (Too many likes in two sentences, I might need to find a synonym dictionary.) But my problem is that when I get annoyed, I take it out on the wrong way. I throw sarcasm at my insecurities and expect everything to heal itself. I usually fail, but I didn’t want to lose a potential friend because of my passive attack. Or was it aggressive? Geez, I think too much.

Surprised, Edward locked eyes with me and I finally realized what all the fuss was about. His green eyes were “a sight to behold”. (But no, I did not blush after having thought that. I blush in awkward situations, like if I had walked in on people having sex or something. I would blush if there were a chance, but lying to myself wasn’t one of my admirable qualities.)

Therefore, no blushing from me.

“Uh,” he stuttered. “Um, no. It was never like that in Chicago. I dunno what’s their problem.”

“I do. It’s the eyes.” I pointed at mine before pointing at his. “Definitely the eyes.”

He frowned. “Excuse me?”

“They’re —” I shut up before saying something equally dumb and embarrassing, “—green.”

“So?” he asked. “What does that have to do with anything?”

I got stuck. “It’s, well, rare,” I swallowed. “Maybe they’ve never seen that before.”

He shook his head, chuckling. “That’s insane.”

“That’s life. Anyway, if you have that many admirers, why did you sit next to the one who had the audacity not to fall on her knees in front of you?”

“Exactly.” He pointed at me with his ballpoint pen before adding something to the poster. “Exactly. I needed a friend.”

I raised my right eyebrow. “I’m your friend?”

He avoided my eyes. “I mean, uh,” Edward started awkwardly. “It’s just…”

I chuckled, leaning closer and pretending secrecy as I whispered, “Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone.”

He leaned away. I think I had a small seizure when I realized what he might’ve thought. I cringed. The thing with being unappealing (and knowing it!) is that I had forgotten that other people could easily take my bold actions the wrong way. And my actions were straight-forward only because I was fully aware of how ugly I looked. I just didn’t have a chance. But I probably needed to let Edward know so we’d avoid the ‘I don’t feel anything other than friendship for you’ speech.

“Good.” He smiled. “I was so afraid to be seen around you.”

“That wouldn’t make you any different from anyone else, really,” I joked, smiling. “No biggie.”

He huffed and smiled, probably not quite figuring out if I was joking or not. Unfortunately, Biology ended soon and we went our different ways for the rest of the day.

This is such a gem of a story! Dairy of an Ugly Girl starts out as a chronicle of Bella’s life that had me smiling and giggling at the clumsy attempts of an awkward girl to get through high school, then quickly becomes a gripping tale of infinite depth, a struggle with inner demons and horrendous sadness, all intertwined around genuine friendship and love.

At eighteen chapters in, I’m glad we’ve got a guaranteed HEA, but I have to say I think there are more tears to shed along the way!

The Debt by Ta Paixao

The Debt

*made by Ta Paixao*

The Debt ~ Juniors in college, Bella and Edward live together under a tense agreement. They aren’t exactly friends – not anymore – but Edward has a debt to pay and a promise to keep. Edward will get his chance at redemption… Rated for all sorts of adult content. EPOV.

Twilight – Rated: M – English – Drama/Angst – Chapters: 21 – Words: 58,822 – Reviews: 1273 – Updated: 7-18-13 – Published: 5-29-13 – Bella & Edward

The author’s note – This story will deal with sensitive subject matter indirectly. No descriptions, flashbacks, scenes, or narration.

A/N: I told myself I wouldn’t start a new story until London Calling and Crashed were complete, but this one wanted out. I’ve been kicking the idea around for a while, so here is your introduction to The Debt. As always, mind the rating. My characters are rarely polite and the story won’t be all flowers and sweet romance.

What you will get is a Tattward who is a surly bastard, loyal to a fault, and hellbent on burning the world down with him to keep a promise. Enjoy.

The Debt

Heed that warning from the author well, dear readers! The Debt is full of dark humour, sad moments and very beautiful friendship, masked by snark; deep love hidden by circumstance; secrets too heartbreaking to share.  Written entirely from Edward’s point of view, we’re given snippets along the way that give the reader glimpses into the real depth of the profound connection shared between Edward and Bella.

As it is still a WiP – we’re currently twenty-one chapters in – I’m still hanging on for every update, literally waiting for more…thankfully they come regularly and never disappoint. Every chapter moves the story along, gives us more insight and sometimes more questions…but always leaves devotees wanting more!

At first sight, Edward and Bella don’t really appear to get along, but it’s clear there’s a long history between them. As their story is gradually unveiled-and beautifully so; Ta Paixao has such an engaging style – it’s easy to see how they have come to this point. I guarantee your heart will ache for them both. The truth is more complicated than it first appears, even when some things become clear, there’s always more to be understood.

Go ahead and read it now! They will both make you cry, and then laugh, frustrate the hell out of you, make you scream, but ultimately you’ll fall in love with both of them. I hope, like me, you’ll be willing them to see how much they’re loved.

Do not be deceived by first appearances, if you don’t approve of Edward sleeping with other girls, just this once, ignore it.  It’s fine, we don’t get details – just the morning after walk of shame! It’s a bone of contention between the pair, but, remember: appearances can be very deceptive.

Here’s Edward in chapter one:

Surveying my bedroom, which consisted mostly of piles of laundry I’d been avoiding, I processed through the sniff test until I found a pair of dark jeans and a black Henley that were on the passable side of clean. I’d strip the bed later. My current priority was starchy food to settle my stomach.

When I hit the landing from the stairs that led toward the kitchen on one side and the living room on the other, I felt a pair of knowing brown eyes watching me. I knew I shouldn’t look over there. Nothing good ever came from the morning after ritual. But as usual, I just couldn’t help but glance at the girl curled up on the couch with her laptop open and ear buds hidden under dark hair.

Seven little fingers were held up over her head, but Bella averted her gaze back to the computer screen rather than look for my reaction. Like she didn’t give a fuck.

“Don’t you have anything better to do than wait for the walk of shame?”

“Don’t you have an appointment to get your dick swabbed for STDs?”

“Fuck off.”

“Get bent.”

And so everything was par for the course on a Sunday morning. I held out my middle finger as I turned toward the kitchen. Every weekend was the same routine. Bella would be up bright and early to witness a girl from the night before making her way out with her bra in her hand and her makeup smeared. I’d glare at her flat expression of indifference. We’d send a few barbs at each other across the room, and then do it all over again a week later. The scoring system referred to the noise level of the previous evening.

Bella, the socially deficient roommate I’d been saddled with, was usually tucked in her room by the time I stumbled in from the bar or a gig. Inevitably, the sound of my headboard beating a hole into the wall or a chick getting well and good would wake her up. But she never came banging on my door to shut us up and she never tried to shove us off to the one-night stand’s place. She just put up with it and gave me shit in the morning.

The reason for our strained living arrangement was a long, complicated, depressing-as-fuck story. It usually took the short walk from the stairs to the kitchen counter for me to remember why the hell I’d agreed to it. However, once my eyes landed on the breakfast left warm and waiting, I forgot all about being annoyed with Punky and smiled. The girl could seriously cook.

That was all bullshit. I knew exactly why I was living in this massive house in the middle of nowhere, an hour from campus, with the girl who was both the bane of my existence and top priority.

Nothing is ever as simple as it first seems, so stay with them. I’m keeping everything crossed that they will get their HEA, because if two people ever deserved it, it’s got to be these two.

Summer Loving

Summer Loving

Hi! Gingerandgreen here, continuing our Sailing Through The Summer cruise this Fanfic Friday, with some Summer Loving reviews to turn up the heat.

I was twelve years old when the movie Grease came out, and I must have watched that movie fifteen times. That was way before the internet, DVDs or even video, Spring Chickens, so that took dedication. To this day, when I think of hot summer nights, this is the soundtrack that springs to mind:

It’s that mixture of sexy-sweet I wanted to bring to you all today, and I hope this little selection does the trick.

Venice Beach Stories by Chicklette

*Made by Cared*

A collection of o/s taking place in and around Venice Beach, CA. Various POVs voices. Canon couples, AH. M for sex, drugs.

I know there are many fabulous Twific authors I haven’t come across yet, but I’m amazed that I’ve only just discovered Chicklette. Let me just say from the outset, this woman can write! Her words flow around your consciousness as gently and warmly as the sea surrounding Isle Esme.

Venice Beach is far away from the honeymoon idyll, and for those of you who’ve never been there, it’s not an easy place to describe. Chicklette’s short stories give you a wonderful insight into a different kind of young adult from the ficnorm. Most of the gang are there – Edward, Bella, Rose, Emmett, Jasper, Rachel, Paul… but the pairings show more of a realistic cross-section of society than Stephenie Meyer did. Each story is told as though those characters are the only important people in the world, just exactly like young lovers are wont to feel. Every chapter draws you tenderly into a point of view you never want to leave:

The first time I see him it’s late in May. It’s gray and gloomy at one in the afternoon, and the monochrome skies remind me of home. I pull the sleeves of my hoodie down around my fingers and watch the boys play in the skate park while I force myself to read Wharton. The breeze shoots gusts of salty air at me, and the sun finally peeks out of the clouds.

I can’t pretend I’m interested in the book anymore, so I close it and tilt my face to the sky. Gulls cry and people are laughing, shouting. The ever-present hum of wheels on concrete, plus the relentless beat of the ocean create a symphony that soothes me. Venice Beach is always alive, thriving with yuppie scum and punk rock kids, barrio boys and girls who look like super models, sunning themselves on roller blades.

I sit up and watch a group of guys skating. There’s a new crew that I don’t think I’ve ever seen bunderefore: A big guy who looks like he should be on the weights and not floating two inches above ground on a board, a blond, rangy guy working a 70’s stoner look that almost hides how gorgeous he is, and a tall, blonde girl who probably breaks hearts with every smile. She’s lanky like the guy and I wonder if they’re dating or siblings and when I lean closer to watch them, I see their eyes are cut from the same slice of blue sky. The girl’s wearing short shorts and knee socks, and if she wasn’t so good on her board, I’d call her a poser.

The three of them are making easy loops in one of the bowls when I hear a whoop and watch as a boy, tall, appears from around the curve and drops into their bowl. He skates past the big guy and there’s high-fives between them. He’s wearing a pork pie hat and a Zero shirt, and when his face tilts in my direction I’m stunned. He’s beautiful. He’s pretty and gorgeous, and cute, too, rocking a few days’ stubble across his jaw and big scab on his left knee. The four of them roll to the bottom of the bowl, then split off, each performing for the others.

Venice Beach stories are about sex, in the same way that Babette’s Feast is about food. Chicklette tells the stories of all the characters through their physical connections with each other. It’s not meant to be titillating (or tit-elating, as one of my crazy friends says) so much as illuminating. The way we love tells a lot about our characters, and these stories are like finely drawn erotic portraits in a cool and ‘with it’ art gallery:

Edward leans down over me, and then he’s pushing into me. I want him to just do it, just slam inside of me and start fucking because god, I’m so ready, but he doesn’t; he’s slow and he keeps his eyes on mine until my heart pounds. He’s breathing hard through his mouth and just filling me up until I’m pinned by him, his eyes and his body, like he’s taken me over, subsumed me.

I’ve only given you a taste of Edward and Bella’s story, and I’m a real traditionalist when it comes to fic – I want to read about E&B forever. But I can’t honestly choose whose story I like best – my favourite pair; Paul and Rachel’s slow discovery; or Jasper’s agonising and ultimately sexy coming out. All I can say is, if you don’t read any of them, you are missing something wonderful.

The Longest Summer by lexiecullen17

*Banner by CassieWH*

The Longest Summer ~ Bella wants Edward…the only problem is, he’s a counselor at her summer camp. And although Bella has always been one of Edward’s favorite campers, that’s all she’ll ever be to him…right? When Bella returns as a counselor, can she change his mind? AH.

Now this story is just plain fun. I never got to do the summer camp thing, and I always feel as though I missed out on something great. Lexiecullen’sThe Longest Summer both proves me right and makes up for what I missed by bringing the summer camp experience to life.

Luckily for Perve-hoOrs, this is a camp counsellor story, and all the main characters are all grown up enough to feel comfortable living vicariously through them:

I took a small step back away from the bar and saw a flash of bronze in my peripheral vision. And then I panicked.

“Alice—I need you to get me a vodka lemonade,” I shouted over the loud music. She didn’t respond, only followed my gaze before heading back to the bar. I’d pay her back tomorrow. Right now, I needed a bit of liquid encouragement. The sweet liquid felt good in my stomach as I sucked up sip after sip through the long, pink straw.

“That better not be what I think it is,” a soft velvet voice warned in my ear. I spun around quickly, only to be met with the gorgeous green eyes that had invaded my dreams for the past five years. He looked even better than I remembered, all artistic and brooding with his intense emerald eyes and disheveled bronze hair.

“Lemonade?” I smiled cheekily, glad that I already had a shot and a half a drink under my belt before his arrival. He rolled his eyes, making a disapproving cluck with his tongue before grabbing the drink out of my hand. I stood there, mesmerized, as I watched his lips latch onto the straw and take a long pull of the drink before handing it back to me.

“I know we haven’t spoken in a few years, but I know you’re not old enough to be drinking that.”

“And I know we haven’t spoken in a few years, but I know you’re not old enough to be acting like my father, Edward.” His name rolled off my tongue easily, surprising us both. Feeling brazen and confident, I ran my hand along his shoulder as I walked away from him.

Suddenly, I felt a pull on my wrist, slowing me down. “Where are you going?” His eyes were laughing.

“To get another drink. Some geezer just stole half of mine.” His lips curled into a half smile as he shrugged and released my wrist. I walked back towards the bar feeling on top of the world. I had no idea who this girl was, but I think I liked her.

At the bar, Emmett passed me another drink, smiling widely. I looked around, but Rosalie was nowhere to be seen…and Alice was chatting rather animatedly with a tall, blonde guy I’d never seen before.

The rest of the night became a blur as Emmett and I decided to go shot for shot. Definitely a poor choice on my part.

The next thing I knew, my head was throbbing, and I was begging for death. My mouth felt like sandpaper, and the ground swayed below my horizontal body. I opened my eyes cautiously, having no idea where I was or how I got home. All I knew was that the air around me smelled delicious.

“LB,” I heard the velvet voice calling me, coaxing me from my slumber. “LB, wake up…” A tingling path ran from my shoulder, down my arm. I tensed, the pieces of the evening clicking into place.

The great thing about this story is it doesn’t end with a sickly sweet and rather unrealistic HEA at the end of the summer. Don’t get me wrong, HEA comes, but the characters have to work for it. Along the way, they get up to enough mischief to warrant a management intervention, but nothing gets in the way of true love – eventually! The heat, the descriptions, the story and the UST add together to make this an entertaining and summer-filled read. If you’re looking for fun and just enough drama to keep you involved, you can’t go wrong with Lexiecillen 17.

Between the Bars by theladyingrey42

*Made by RoseArcadia*

Between the Bars ~ She dances from my arms into his, never knowing the damage she inflicts, nor the risk she runs as she tests my control. I want to be everything to her, but I can no more change my past than I can bring myself to let her go. Summer Lovin’ Contest Winner

Between The Bars is a summer one-shot with something for everyone. Published in 2010, this story won multiple prizes in the Summer Lovin’ contest, and it is most certainly deserving of those. Theladyingrey writes beautifully and meaningfully. I felt hot, in more than one way, reading this story. The heat of summer crackles through her words, and the heat of the pull between Edward and Bella had me wiping my brow:

She arrives on the first warm wind of summer. It blows through her hair, warm chestnut lengths matching eyes full of distance and discernment, and standing in stark contrast to skin that is pale and rose.

From over the white picket fence around my mother’s house, I see her unloading two weathered suitcases. There is sweat on her brow and a look of tension on her face as her father insists on taking one, her pale and slender arms folding over a chest that is ripe and full.

To the boy who races out of the house next door to hers, she is clearly a familiar face, his russet arms wrapping around her as he lifts her into the air and earns a smile that looks like sunlight and the sweetness of reunion.

To me, still new to the dark green heart of this sleepy town, she is a spark amidst so much damp and mouldering earth. She is vitality and lush curves to my senses and eyes, and soft skin and warmth to empty hands that have gone a long and lonely year without the pleasure of human touch.

I turn away from the open window and from the lingering embrace of their bodies and of their laughter. I don’t watch as he grabs her hand and tugs at her, stumbling up her stairs and through her door. I don’t hear it banging shut or watch as their glowing faces appear in a picture window, like a one-way mirror into a world that is not mine.

And never will be.

“And never will be.” – come on, Edward, this is Bella we’re talking about – there is no problem in the world you cannot overcome. Admittedly, the problem Edward has in this story is pretty serious, and if you suspect you know what it is, your heart bleeds for the boy. So cleverly canon, though devastatingly human, this short story will pull at your heartstrings and make the ache worthwhile.

*SQUEE* It’s Summertime and I am very excited to be Surfing Into Summer with you today! Summer is the warmest season of the year, here in the northern hemisphere, from June to August, and as things heat up outside, I’m going to heat them up in here for you . . . with some very wet, and smokin’ hot summery Edward! Today, we’re going to be California Dreamin’ from Tower32 with The Merman and some Dirty Talkin’ Edward ! Let’s start off by riding the wave with Surferward . . . cause nothin’ beats a wet quickie in the summer heat!

Tower 32 by wandb ~ one shot

Erotica Chalenge 2011 ~ 1st Place Public Choice - Tower 32 by wandb (banner)

Tower 32 ~ 1st place winner in the Erotica Challenge Contest public vote and IndieFicPimp Award winner. When Bella finally gets her chance to talk to the hot and sexy surfer she’s been admiring from afar for months, she realizes he’s a lot more than just a pretty face.

In my humble and slightly perverted opinion, *grins* Bella Swan, Lifeguard extraordinaire, has the best summer job ever – she gets to ogle, I mean guard, Edward and all the other sexy surfers from atop Tower32, high above the sandy world on Brooks Street beach – and, of course, she agrees with me! Tough job, but someone has to take one for the team, right? lol

Part One: Tower 32

I had the best job in the world. I got paid, quite well actually, to sit on the beach and soak up the sun all day long, leaving me with some serious tan lines. Most of the time being a lifeguard was chill, but it was also about being vigilant. I constantly monitored the beach and waves, keeping an eye out for any signs of distress. Lifeguards are often called upon to make split second decisions that can mean the difference between life and death, and I’d seen that firsthand. I’d had one major rescue of a little boy who I thought might not make it, and it had been harrowing. I took my job seriously because people’s lives were at stake.

I loved my work every day, but the best days were when I worked Tower 32, which was conveniently located on Brooks Street beach, the best surfing spot in town, and subsequently one of the most active beaches. Not coincidentally, it had some of the best scenery.

Having grown up in a beach town and lifeguarding every summer for the last five years, I had seen my share of gorgeous, physically fit boys. But one stood out. He wore his board shorts slung low on his hips, and his chest and torso were well-defined from the hours spent surfing. He had a tan line at his waist that always made me curious to see just how fair-skinned he really was. It called to me.

The best thing about him was his face. He was so beautiful it was almost painful. He had a chiseled jaw that was often dusted with light stubble, and a great smile that reflected his confidence. Even from my tower, I could see his eyes sparkle with mischief, making me wonder what color they were. They were a brilliant green in my frequent Surfer Boy dreams, where he was on top of me, skin glistening with sweat, neck and back muscles straining, head thrown back in ecstasy…. Dammit!

I sighed as I leaned back in my chair with my binoculars and scanned the water, searching for the bronze god who had driven me to distraction all summer. I could sit and watch him all day long, and that was a problem. He made it incredibly hard to stay focused on my job. I also had to sit by and watch scores of girls in skimpy bikinis hit on him. Watching them, I discovered that girls could be shameless, and I found their attempts at seduction comical.

I shook my head to clear the daydream and started scanning the beach. I quickly spotted my surfer boy and struggled to tear my eyes away as he got out of the water and did that sexy hair shake that all surfer guys seemed to master. He pulled it off like no one else with his unruly, thick mane of bronze hair that was artfully disheveled. Drops of water dripped down his face and onto to his board shorts, drawing my eyes to his toned body. I’d never wanted to be a drop of water so badly in my life.

“Why don’t you just go talk to him, Bella?” Emmett teased as he came out onto the deck of the tower, catching me with my binoculars aimed straight at my surfer boy.

I punched Emmett in his rock-hard bicep, probably hurting me more than him. “Don’t sneak up on me like that. You scared me! And I can’t talk to him. Just look at him!”

Believe us, Bella, we’re looking, we’re looking!

*Made by Cared*

But that is quite a dilemma for poor Bella, to want ^^THAT ^^ but not think you’re enough that he’d want you. Now, I’m not going to tell you what happens; I’m just saying that sometimes fate intervenes, and a need could arise when Lifeguardella will have to rescue our sexy, wet Surferward! *wink* . . . and who knows what that wave will bring in with it! Surfs up, my friends, grab it and go!

The Merman ~ Bella’s willpower is tested by the young hottie at the pool. Older and wiser she makes a move that will change their lives forever. E/B AH

Rated: Fiction M – English – Humor/Romance – Bella & Edward – Words: 10,623 – Reviews: 366 – Favs: 758 – Follows: 256 – Published: 07-06-11 – Status: Complete – id: 7153634

I am going to continue to keep you all hot and bothered, and maybe even a little wet, *wink* but this time our Lifeguard is eighteen-year-old Edward, who may or may not be the object of twenty-four-year old Bella’s affections. Bella is a summer Nannie while she waits to start grad school in the fall, and also “not necessarily a cougar yet, but closer to cougar than high school girl.” LMAO that line gets me every time I read it, and that is just a taste of the hilarious, perverted humour in this one shot.

Each day Bella and Alice, also a Nannie of similar age to Bella, take their wards to the local pool, where they have one main topic of conversation. Actually, that’s not strictly true; it does vary slightly . . . depending on the body part of said Lifeguard, they are discussing at the time . . .

“What color are his eyes?” Alice asks a couple days later. The ‘Merman’, as we’ve started calling him, is giving swim lessons to a little boy across the pool.

“I don’t know. I couldn’t look at them.” I stretch back in my lounge chair, keeping one eye on him and one on the girls playing in the deep end. “Blue, maybe?” His summer dark skin would look nice with blue eyes.

“No, I think they’re brown.”

“Really?” I look over at him, taking a swallow of water from my bottle. He’s sunk below the water line, nose to nose with his student. He’s wearing goggles so confirmation is impossible.

“Well,” she says, “His nipples are brown.”

“Alice!” I choke on the water. “You did not just say that.”

“Well, they are!” We both start laughing and she says, “That’s why I don’t know what color they are. I can’t stop looking at his chest!”

“Shh…he’s not deaf.”

Alice makes a face. “Bella, you’re young, hot, and single. Why not go for it?”

“Why? Are you kidding?”

“No, I’m not kidding. Why not?”

I start ticking off my fingers. “One, because he’s eighteen. Two, because clearly he has a girlfriend, why wouldn’t he have a girlfriend? Three, because he’s eighteen and I’m much older than that, and four, because even though he’s only eighteen I’m pretty sure he’s out of my league.”

“Are you done?”

“No,” I hold up finger number five. “And he’s eighteen. Barely.”

Seems Bella is struggling a bit with her attraction to Edward and their age difference . . . but the real question is, and it’s a hell of a fun read to find out the answer: Does she take the plunge and join her Merman in the sea, or should I say pool, of love? Don your bikinis, ladies, and dive right in to find out!

California Dreamin’ ~ 1967. Summer stalked in like a lion that year, fierce and angry; looking for someone to eat. Among the hippies, free love and Vietnam, we were forced to grow up, whether we wanted to or not.

Rated: Fiction M – English – Drama/Romance – Bella & Edward – Words: 4,211 -Reviews: 93 – Favs: 104 – Follows: 207 Reviews: 69 – Favs: 82 – Follows: 161 – Published: 06-26-13 – id: 9428516

To begin the review for this wonderful, new story today, I’d like to share a very apt synopsis of California Dreamin’, written by author SparrowNotes24, close friend, confidant and pre-reader of Chocaholic123:

Choc sent me the first chapter of California Dreamin’ late one night, and I probably woke up the neighbours with my squeals of excitement, and that was just the first sentence…

“Summer stalked in like a lion that year; fierce, angry, and looking for something to eat.”

The history and culture of San Francisco in 1967 is woven beautifully into the writing, painting a vivid picture that draws you in to the scorching Sixties summer. I wanted to stay there, lying on the front lawn, slurping an ice-cold can of Tab while I watched their story unfold.

It’s told from Bella’s point of view and begins with a portrayal of two best friends, coming of age at the start of a turbulent time for America. They are ready to burst out of their small town life and head into the big city looking for freedom, excitement and love.

As the story develops, the uneasy rumblings of the Vietnam War, political unrest and growing Civil Rights movements begin to shape their world. The effects are far-reaching for Bella’s relationships, those with her family, friends, and ultimately, with Edward, who is about to leave to fight for his country in Vietnam.

Their connection is a heady mix of innocence and passion, but the real world soon encroaches, and they’re forced to grow up and leave behind the simple love-soaked, lazy days of the start of their summer.

All the characters are impacted by the changes taking place around them in some way or another. The results are heart breaking, inspiring and every other emotion in between.

I’ve laughed and cried, read with my heart in my throat and my head in the freezer. (Of course Sixtiesward is a ladykiller. He’s caused me to overheat on more than one occasion!)

This was originally meant to be a one-shot, and when she told me it was developing into a lot more, I was over the moon.

California Dreamin’ is something a little different from Choc, but without a doubt, it’s going to be very special. ~ SparrowNotes24

Yes, I agree, it is definitely different, special, and also, IMHO, very creative, so let’s continue California Dreamin’ with the lovely Chocaholic123, but first we should set the mood for this 60’s fic, so please click and listen, as you read the review!

California Dreamin’ – Mamas & The Papas

Back the first of May, I saw this pic . . .

California Dreamin’ picspiration!
*made by Evenstar*

. . . it was in SparrowNotes24 Facebook group, and some ladies were debating the validity, whether manip or not, and I said, “This is a manip, yes, BUT, could be a damn fine picspiration for a one shot! WOW!” So, I sent it off to Chocaholic123, hoping she’d love the imagery it created as much as me, knowing she’d see the inspiration in it, as well . . . and she did! It was after this, that she started to write and research, what was originally a one shot, but her writing creativity, I’ve discovered, knows no bounds, and after weeks of writing, she now has her new, exciting and very original fic set in the late 1960’s, California Dreamin’.

I can tell you, because I have pre-read the first 8 chapters, that this story is really well-written and going to be epic, like nothing I’ve ever read or even heard about in Twific before. Most of the Twilight gang are there, in some way, shape or form, but these characters, references, the mood, and settings are true to “The Sixties” era – this “cultural decade” – known for sex, drugs, freedom, irresponsible excess, flamboyance and, of course, San Francisco!

The story begins in Wentworth, California, where we meet “good girl” Bella Swan and her “queen of politics at Wentworth High” best friend, Angela. They spend the day at the beach, dreaming about their future, as they’ve just graduated from high school. They are both off to college in the fall, but before that, Angela and Bella make a plan to escape the confines of Wentworth and travel to the big city of San Francisco for the adventure of a lifetime . . .

A station wagon slowly drove down Maple, swinging into the driveway opposite Angela’s house. We watched as Mrs. Black unloaded her three children, shooing them up the driveway and shouting at the dog as he refused to leave the trunk of the car.

“I’m going to San Francisco next week.” Angela confided as the eldest son turned around and stuck his tongue out at us.

“What? Why?” And the unspoken sentence; can I come?

“One of Martin Luther King’s staff is coming to make a speech. I missed his visit in January; I’m sure as hell not going to miss this.” Angela was the queen of politics at Wentworth High, and I was her willing aide. Together we’d arranged demonstrations, written banned articles and—our pièce de résistance—orchestrated a sit-in against the Vietnam War that lasted four days. The Principal hadn’t been pleased. “Plus, I seriously want to see the hippies in Haight-Ashbury; it’s social history in the making. Are you coming?”

“My dad will never let me go.” I picked at the rust on the arm of the chair, letting the flakes fall to the ground.

“So, don’t ask him. Tell him you’re sleeping over with me. My mom will back us up.” Mrs. Weber was what my dad called “permissive.” It wasn’t a compliment.

Rolling my bottom lip between my teeth, I scanned through my options. I could stay here while Angela went and had all the fun, getting to experience the excitement that was San Francisco. Or I could go with her, throw myself into the experience, and come back with a story I could tell my grandchildren one day.

For most people that wasn’t much of a choice. But I was a good girl—always maintaining decent grades, always home before curfew. I was afraid of authority; particularly fearful of my dad, and this made me procrastinate for longer than I should.

“Okay, I’ll go.” My stomach lurched at the thought.

“Really?” Angela was as surprised as I was. I nodded, unable to speak, scared that the nausea rumbling at the pit of my stomach would rise up and make itself known. Angela grabbed my hand, her grin wide with excitement. “This is going to be so much fun, Bella.”

Fun, yes, political, definitely, romantic? Oh, yes, especially when Edward Cullen – pre-med college student and soon to be Vietnam soldier – makes his appearance, as they – Angela, her boyfriend Ben, Tyler, Eric, Bella and Edward – begin their trek to San Francisco. The car they travel in is hot from the summer heat, but the connection between Edward and Bella, as she has to sit on his lap for the entire trip, *wink* is scorching!

There is so much to learn and experience in California Dreamin’ as we live vicariously through these swinging 60’s characters; from donning CND T-shirts adorned with colourful peace symbols, to freedom speeches and controversial rallies, and, of course, the summer of 1967 was well-known for being “The Summer of Love” in San Francisco. It also became an important year for psychedelic rock, with releases from The Beatles, The Doors, Pink Floyd, The Stones, The Who . . . and many more great music legends! So, crank up your turntable, place some flowers in your hair and put your sandalled feet up, then please join us for this wild and crazy 1967 ride; I know you’re going to enjoy it as much I already am!

And, since I’ve already read the second chapter, *grins* I’m going to share with you a special teaser for chapter 2; I just love the vivid imagery here:

We were sitting in Buena Vista Park, the sun almost at its summit, causing the grass to shimmer and shine like an oasis in the desert. The hot weather, combined with the number of bodies and the accompanying sound, made the field feel alive, like it was pulsing with blood. There was a sweet, smoky undercurrent to the gentle breeze, a fragrance I remembered from beneath the bleachers at high school on a Friday night, when the dropouts made their own fun.

Edward sat opposite, leaning back on the grass, dark sunglasses shielding his eyes. He rolled a joint, lifting it to his full lips to light it, dragging it in and holding his breath for a moment before exhaling. His lips circled so the smoke came out in rings. I watched as he passed the joint to Tyler, who almost snatched it away with eagerness.

Angela leaned across and grabbed my hand, squeezing tightly. “I know you like Edward,” she whispered in my ear. I rolled my eyes, but couldn’t bring myself to deny my feelings. “Just go for it, Bella. Live life a little. Whatever happens here, it’s meant to be, okay?”
