This is going to be a little different, I think. Bella is very focused, almost abrasive in her manner unless she is with a client and, at the beginning, unable to form any sort of personal attachment.

It is an Edward and Bella story but he won’t appear for a while so don’t worry. When he does show, it will alter her carefully constructed world.

Ha! That’s puttin’ it mildly *gigglesnort!* Now, since my banner pretty much gives it away, let me introduce you to HHD {Hot Homeless Dude}!

He was obviously homeless and had been so for a while by the look of him. His clothes were stained and dirty, his hair unkempt and looked a really funny colour and his matching beard was as straggly.

I ran past him the first time. I was too mad with myself to approach him but by my second lap I was ready so I slowed my pace as the bench came into view. He was still in exactly the same position and for a moment I wondered if he was sleeping, if he was I didn’t want to wake him so I slowed right down and came to a stop in front of him.

His breathing was even and deep. I couldn’t help but stare at the dirty worn coat that moved with his chest, he seemed so relaxed and at peace that I decided to just leave him alone. I moved closer to him as I had the urge to tough him but I stopped myself at the last moment. As I made to move away I must have startled him because he opened his eyes and looked straight at me. They were the purest shade of green I have ever seen, crystal clear white surrounded a crisp green iris and a dark black pupil. It was the same strange stare from our previous meeting. I waited for him to acknowledge me but once again he just stared without speaking.

I took the initiative and spoke first ” Hi, I’m Bella and I need to apologise to you.“

One thing’s for sure, I’m dyin’ to find out HHD’s backstory!

He was nearing the end of his shift when it happened.

“Dr Cullen,” a young red haired nurse called, as she approached where he stood at the desk. He had just handed over his notes so that one of his current patients could be discharged. She was out of breath when she reached him.

“There’s another overdose patient,” she panted, “Sorry, but we need you.”

He knew why she was apologizing, his shift was supposed to end very soon. Most doctors would have been irritated and tired this late into their shift, but he wasn’t most doctors. He could work indefinitely, and if he didn’t have a wife at home, he probably would have. He nodded to the nurse, and followed her direction to where the patient was being worked on.

As they walked, the nurse explained the situation.

“A car just pulled up outside and dumped her here,” she told him, “she’s got no ID and we don’t know what she’s taken. Looks to be a mixture of drugs and alcohol though.”

He knew what would have to be done, he’d known almost as soon as the nurse had mentioned that the patient had overdosed. They reached the patient then and he almost froze at the scent of the woman in front of him. She had lost weight, had partially dyed hair and a piercing through her nose and more than one in her ears. In the two years since they had moved from Forks, leaving her behind, she had changed herself almost beyond recognition. He would never forget her scent though, despite what his son had decided to do, she would always be a part of their family. It hurt him to see what she had reduced herself too, but his hurt fueled his actions. He had to save her.

These first few paragraphs grabbed me hard and I wait anxiously for the drafts of each new chapter to land in my inbox ’cause guess who’s the beta!

The Commander calls my name and I step forward. With a steadying breath, I return his gaze and nod slightly. I watch as the knife cuts into my palm and the blood begins to flow from the wound. I raise my left arm to the people facing me as I begin to recite my Oath.

“I, Edward, son of Esme, daughter of Emily, daughter of Emma, daughter of Elaine, daughter of Eleni of the house and lineage of Elizabeth, do freely and without reservation pledge my Oath to the people of this valley, that I will serve and protect them, that I will forego all selfishness and place their needs before my own, that I will remain loyal and steadfast until my service ends. This I swear with my blood which I shed this day.”

I am calm when the Commander turns to the audience and announces that I have been assigned as a Ranger. A murmur makes its way through the crowd, and I see a few looks of shock and dismay. My parents come forward and begin to give me my Ranger’s gear. In addition to a new sword, my father straps a short knife around my thigh. He loops a long, lethal bullwhip around my left shoulder and a quiver of arrows and a bow on my right shoulder. Mother attaches the Ranger insignia, and Alice pins my Oath Taker medal to my tunic.

My gaze shifts up to my brother, who is staring back at me with a look of such sadness that my breath catches in my chest. As I watch, he begins to stand and, as though in slow motion, the rest of the Protectors stand the audience and all the cadets rise to honor the vow I have just made. They know, as well as I do, what this assignment means. I glance back at my Father, whose jaw is clenching to hide his emotion. My Mother’s eyes are glassy with unshed tears and my little sister Alice is… smiling?

I’ve just been given an assignment that is tantamount to a death sentence, and Alice is smiling.

If THAT doesn’t make you sit up and take notice, I don’t know what will!

I wave the gloves at him. “What are we doing with these?”

“We’re going to transplant a few of the hybrids to get them ready for their flowering cycle.”

“Cool.” I bob my head. “But again, in the interest of full disclosure, I’d like it noted that no plant has ever survived in my care.”

“Duly noted,” he calls from over his shoulder as he leads us over to a dirty counter top.

Normally whenever anyone talks at length about anything science related, after about thirty seconds they sound like the teacher on Charlie Brown to me. I admit most of the shit about stable root systems and proper soil saturation goes right over my head. But what I don’t miss is the way his eyes flicker to mine when our dirt covered fingers brush repeatedly in the soil or the easy smiles that come from the playful nudges and relentless teasing.

“Congratulations,” he says when we’re done. I quirk a brow at him earning me another smug grin. “You had a successful interaction with a plant without a fatality.”

“Only time will tell.” I walk back over to the E.C. Kush area. “When will my plant get the purple flowers on it?”

“Within the next thirty to forty days or so.”

“So pretty,” I murmur, softly touching the fine leaf hairs, feeling his eyes on me. “Too pretty to smoke it.”

“One hit will make you change your mind.”

Something about the way he says that makes my insides flip. “Probably would.”

As a child of the Sixties, I thought I knew a lot about weed, but this fic is an education and a half LMAO!
