Okay, it is no secret that I LOVE a good juicy Assward.  I have often mulled this thought over and wondered why I like this genre so much… and have often wondered if there is something wrong with me (and there probably is) *sniggers*.., but I have come to the conclusion that I love to watch the redemption. Also, I do love a good challenge.

Just this last week, Practice to Deceive by Livie79 completed and I was so excited. I have had this story on alert for months and I was just waiting for it to be complete.  The reason that I waited for this one to be complete is because I read the first chapter (which happens to be the prologue) and I thought “oh no, this one is gonna have to be complete before I read it”.. In lots of ways, I wish now I had read it as a WIP, but hindsight is always 20/20.

Right now, I am suffering from lack of sleep, because this rollercoaster of a story has kept me up nights, and *whispers* I may be guilty of sneaking chapters during worktime too…

Practice to Deceive is a story about a man (Edward) who has been the victim of the ultimate betrayal from his best friend (Jake) and his girlfriend of three years (Maggie).  We (and his family) watch helplessly as Edward turns into a bitter, angry twisted version of the man he used to be.

Bella comes into the story as the object of Jake’s affection that Edward soon finds out about.  Wanting to seek revenge against Jake, Edward sets out to steal Bella away from him and he succeeds.  Unfortunately, Bella is an innocent bystander in all this hurt and betrayal, and she pays the price for Edward’s deceit…

Excerpt from Chapter One (Prologue)

“So I was revenge,” she said, the dead monotone pitch of her voice matching her eyes.

“No, Bella, no, no, no,” I begged, hot tears stinging my eyes. I couldn’t lose her, the thought alone was crushing.

“And all this?” she asked with a humorless chuckle, her arms sweeping wide over the area of my living room, where she had ripped out page after page of my journal. My journal that had every thought, every secret, every wrong that I’d ever done to her.”

A little bit like “Indecent Proposal” that our Cared reviewed a couple of weeks ago (where you see sections of a letter that Bella writes to Edward at the beginning of each chapter), you see snippets of Edward’s journal at the end of the first dozen or so chapters – his journal is where he lets out a lot of his most vitriolic thoughts… and it eventually leads to heartbreak when Bella discovers it.

Excerpt from Chapter 6 – Edward’s Journal

We met for coffee this morning, same as always, but different. I was on edge, annoyed, and I couldn’t figure out why. Things were finally going the way I wanted them to, but maybe that’s what pissed me off. Maybe I wanted her to keep blowing me off, to actually be different, but she wasn’t. We made plans for the weekend, somewhere off campus, her idea, no fucking surprise there. But I’ll take her out, and smile, and be fake, just like her. It’s all about the end game anyway. Always the end game.

There is no getting around it, Edward is an absolute jerk at the beginning of this story – he truly has it in his mind that Bella is nothing more than a cheating liar, just like Maggie.  At no point in the beginning does he ever see her for what she is – an innocent bystander with a beautiful soul, not to mention a sarcastic wit and smart mouth!  Things start to change, however, when Edward learns a few truths about Bella – but unfortunately this still doesn’t stop him pursuing her.  As time goes on, Edward does start to change, even if he doesn’t recognise it and often he is at war with himself, and guilt rears it’s ugly head quite often as well. This is where you just know that the Edward with the soft heart and beautiful soul isn’t dead, just buried a bit.  Both their worlds implode when we come full circle to the prologue, your heart will break at Bella’s reaction, Edward’s deceit hits her hard and the girl with the spark and vitality is crushed. *Ally has a little sob thinking about it.*

In the end though, this story is about Edward’s redemption and the key to his redemption is Bella.  When the real Edward is revealed, you will fall in love with him… I did.

Postscript:  You will also fall in love with Livie, the author, she wrote me the most beautiful review replies…  I have a little lady-crush going on there!!

I have to say, I totally agree with Ally’s list, those are all valiant Asswards! The one Assward WIP I’ve been reading lately, and had rec’d on FanFiction Fridays – Rec for May 25/12, is  High Fidelity by  IReen H.
